Don't want to dispute a big diesel guy, but these trucks are very prone to oil leaks and most of the time it will run out of the back of the engine valley, down the back of the engine and out of the inspection cover on the tranny. It looks very much like a rear seal. The rear seal does fail, but it is so rare that most of us tend to forget about that. Climb up on top of you engine with a good light. Remove the plastic cover over you fuel bowl so you can see, Look down into the valley(center) of the engine. I'm betting you will see oil puddled up down there, probably in the back, under the turbo. If so, you have a top side oil leak that is showing up on the bottom and not a real seal.
were 1000% sure it is not oil though , it looks nothing like oil, I am however going to pop the hood and attempt go get up there and have myself a look. I appreciate the help man!
OKAY UPDATE --- a big diesel guy over in my neighborhood told me that its the rear main seal (main/mane ?) He said its not a huge issue unless its leaking badly in which case we gotta get to the transfer box and deal with it ! sound correct?
So it turns out it was an oil leak? I read somewhere that the rear main seal is a rare thing to leak on the 7.3....
If it not oil then it's not a rear main. If it tranny fluid, it could be a pump seal or if its leaking out of the back of the tranny, a rear seal. Tranny fluid has a very unique smell and should be reddish in color.
It could possibly be a fuel bowl drain oring leak that has disolved some dirt and grease to turn it the blackish color. Although if it was the fuel drain orings I would think you would smell diesel every time you walked past the truck. Well maybe not since the dang engine is well above nose heighth.
I am just surprised that in Paso you dont get pulled over for being that high. My buddy used to have lifted trucks with 44's and we'd get pulled over all the time, for bumper heights.
