I was just about to work on my truck tonight, but the air compressor head gasket has blown out. when i fired up the compressor i hear air pissing out. I just ordered the parts from Grainger so i have to wait. I had a few words to say when i first seen it. I was close to getting the rest of the floors done just had to cut some more metal out with the cut off wheel. Im thinking now after the fact if i could use a cut off on my electric grinder? Will have to go look and see what i have. I kinda feel better now. thanks for reading this bitch and moan moment.
Two years ago I went thru a compressor problem. I was running a cutoff wheel in the die grinder when it seamed that I had to wait more than normal for the compressor(s) to catch up. I had a built up compressor of an 80 gallon tank (a freebie) fed by 2 older sears 2 and 3hp air compressors. Well I stopped and went over to the compressor.and spotted a belt on the floor-no problem it threw a belt. I go to install the belt and the compresso0r drive pulley had come off-still no problem until I noted that the end on the compressor crankshaft had sheared off! That was exactly what I needed, I went and bought myself a 7 1/2 two stage IR-end of problem!

Hey, if you can't unload on us, what else would you do? Wives and girlfriends don't care what happens in the shop so it has to be us or a friend with the same interests.
On the serious side, I use cutoff wheels on my electric grinders all the time. For one thing, they have way more power than the air tools. Just don't buy substatnard wheels because they wearb away too fast. I have found that SAIT makes about the longest lasting ones and they are still made in the USA. Good luck with your compressor.
I have used cutoff wheels on both my air grinder and electric angle grinders. I MUCH prefer the electric angle grinder. It doesn't bog down, run out of air or wimp out. The huge torque made them tough to get used to, but after some time working with them, I have gotten really good at handling them one-handed, if required, and I can get them into tighter places because there's no hose to drag around. The key for me was to use a light touch and let the weight of the tool do the work. Cuts like butter.
I have tried cutoff wheels form many sources, including an excellent local industrial hardware store (McFaddendale). The wheels I prefer are the ones from Harbor Freight. They are thinner and seem to cut better. They probably don't last quite as long as others, but they are so cheap, it doesn't matter.
I keep 3 angle grinders ready for service: one fitted with a cutoff wheel; one with a flapper disk; one with a wire brush. I get my grinders from HF also. They are very rugged, but so inexpensive, I consider them disposable.
I burned up two compressors (110v, oil-less) before I bought a 220v, 5hp honker that I love. Got that from HF also (on sale!!!).
So, now that I am basically done with all the mod/resto work on my truck, I am perfectly outfitted. Figures.
I think he's working on the 'Hood Removal ' sequel as we speak!
It's bound to be filled with things burning, smoking and flash-burns!
I cant wait!...that Mega-Squirt box along with fuel-lines,fuse's, injectors fuel and spark..Don't forget the band-aids......is a good mix for some real excitment!!!....LoL
