Angry OT: Fire ants!

I Know this is off topic, but I have to let my FTE friends know about this.
Folks that live in the north don't know how lucky they are not to have to deal with these pests. They get into anything, trucks, cars, houses, you name it they've been there.
I have had stereo amplifiers burned up in my pickup,my early Bronco burned when they shorted an extension cord and set the grass on fire, and most recently this AM, they chewed the insulation off the wires going to my central air conditioning compressor. The wires burned off flush with it, so it's time to replace A/C unit. This cuts my funds for the Supernats to the minimum. But I'm still going!
OK, I've had my rant, I'll just have to move into the RV for a few days.

My nephew lives in Arkansas and keeps telling me to visit. I'm not sure I want to deal with these fire ants. They sound horrible! Personally, I've never seen them before. Funny? I wonder why my nephew never mentioned them.?

I'll think about the ants the next time I'm shoveling 12" of snow or the next day when it's -10 degrees

If he lives in the northern 2/3s of the state, he's still free of them. They're getting used to the cold though and moving more north every year. Every time something comes out that will at least control them, the gov. takes it off of the market. I controlled quite a few mounds with gasoline for years, but can't afford to pour it on the ground nowdays.

I know exactly what you mean! I'd be glad to exchange snow days for fire ants. Heck, I'd even go for 2 for 1 odds. If it was only that easy!! I have found a few things @ wallyworld that will make them move but nothing that will kill them but gasoline. At $3 a gallon that is a sacrifice now. Thank goodness I live way out in the boonies where I don't have big brother looking over my shoulder.

Steve, have you tried the Spectracide "Once and Done" granules? It looks to be promising so far this year. If it works as well later this summer, I will buy several more bags.

I have heard good reports on it also. I understand it's pretty pricey but if it works it's money well spent. Thanks for the tip. Oh well, it can wait till after the Supernats anyway. Later, Steve

when stationed at Ft. Benning, I dealt with fire ants....on my skin. I'll just say I don't plan on going back to GA.

Speaking of off topic, I smashed my middle finger at work on Wed. I just smashed my pinky with a 3 lb hammer working on the Jeep. Same hand!! I'm done for the day.

It is fine up here. I actually wouldn't know a fire ant if I saw one.

Two years ago my wife and I were at Road Atlanta for a race driving school. After a track session, one student laid his helmet in the grass while he rested. After starting the next session, at high speed on the track, the ants let him know they were unhappy with his sweaty head invading their new home.....
