Cool 2001 e150 conversion van

I have a 2001 ford van with 78,000 miles and will not accelerate past 50 without hestiation. Mechanic says need total engine replacement. 1 cyclinger is only 20 psi. Can anyone help. Mechanic says cost would be about $4500.

What caused him to make that decision?
I'd get a second opinion.
Could be as simple as a burned valve, which sure won't cost $4,500 to repair.

2001 e150 van

He says he checked the compression and the 1 cylinder was at a 20 psi and the service engine light was on and the plugs, wires, and cables were all in good condition. He said that the engine had to be rebuilt to booster the psi in that cylinder. I don;t know anything about what he is talking about. I know I don't have $4500.

You haven't given us enough information to give you an informed opionion, but you should definetly take it to another mechanic and let them draw thier own conclusions.

Some mechanics are not trustworthy, that's why isn't nice to get a quote from two just in case.

2001 ford e150 conversion van

It is a 2001 E150 conversion van. The check engine light started to come on. The van would drive fine until you got up to about 50-55 mph. It would then hestiate like it was stuck. If you took you foot off the gas and then tried it again it would exceed 55. I would put dry gas or fuel injector in the gas tank and it would be OK for a day or so. The mechanic said that when he checked the compression levels that 2 of the cylinders were bad. 1 was 20 psi and the other was 90-100 psi, and the a tune-up would boost the 1 up to about 140, but the other was to far gone to do anything about it except to replace the engine. He said it could be the catalytic converter was clogged.I don't know what to do. I spoke with another mechanic and he said that he felt like he could fix the problem for under a $1000, I don't remember what he said was wrong. ( Not a Mechanical kind of girl )

Going from one estimate of $4500, to another of $1000, I'd keep getting estimates. If it is indeed a bad hole, you're pulling the engine no matter what, and since you've got it out, you might as well do all 8. Maybe do a coolant pressure test, that should narrow it down a little bit.

Sounds like so far, you have 2 guys doing the guessing game scenario with you.
A tune up won't increase compression.

I would think a cylinder leak down test would determine if it's a burned valve, or a bad piston/rings.

Can any of your friends recommend a decent trustworthy mechanic instead of a parts replacer?
