Love our van. Having a problem for the second time and no one seems to have an answer. The engine will start (battery cranks, adequate battery charge)- but the engine will die unless I keep depressing the gas. When I shift into gear the engine dies.
Local mechanics at two different dealerships have no idea what's wrong. Because after I tow the vehicle in it will start.
I agree on the IAC. Had the same problem on my van. I read what seems like a thousand posts on this site of other people with the same thing. Do a search - there are instructions here about how to remove & clean it.
Tahnks for your help! You gave me confidence in dealing wit hthe dealerships mechanics. OIf course, you were 100% correct.
Question, though: the new control valve cost $131 and the labor was $146 (2 hours).
(1) Seems like a lot of time to run the diagnostic and pul and replace the valve. Is it a lot of time---2 hours?
(2) How come the valve's can't just be cleaned? Its a small part that plugs in. No doubt it was sticking because it was dirty. But I saw no screww holes on the part to enable opening it up.Curious about any feedback on this.
I'm in Canada so I cant really comment on the price of the part.
The labor is possibly a bit high but not unrealistic.
A lot of shops have a minimum 1 hour charge for any EEC work.
If they pinpoint tested and monitored live data it could take longer.
To get at the IAC on a van the inside engine cover has to be removed so that takes a bit longer. The valve itself doesn't take long to replace. It has 1 connector and 2 screws.
It wouldn't hurt to ask them for a breakdown of the labor charge though.
The valves can be cleaned but usually it is only a temporary repair and the shop doing it doesn't want to have you come back with the same problem in a month.
