need help chip install gone wrong

Hello,

I recently purchased a early 99 f350 that had a chip that wasn't installed. the chip was hanging under the fuse panel. I think the dealers unhooked it when they were selling it. It is a diesel innovations chip. I popped the cover off of the pcm and installed the chip. Disconnecting the negitives on both batteries before, reconnecting them after. Now the truck will not start.
I disconnected the batteries took the chip out reconnected and the truck still won't start.
The wait to start light will not come on anymore.
What can I do just to get the truck up and going without the chip. I've learned my leason and will take it to a shop to have them install the chip. I really would just like to be able to start the truck and drive it to the shop

Bubba

Check your #30 fuse under the dash, if its blown unplug your fuel bowl heater element (plugged into the back of the fuel bowl, it has shorted and will continue to blow fuses. Reinstall new fuse.

I hope you didn't have the key in the ignition at any point. If you did, the chip and PCM may be toast. I know you disconnected the batteries, 2 right? At any rate, disconnect both batteries again and pull the chip. Let it sit then try again. Hopefully you did not bend a PCM pin. How do you figure it's a DI chip?

Thanks for the reply

I checked fuse 30 and its fine. I waited a while with the key on and then started but it just wont turn over it'll crank and that's it

The key was in my pocket the whole time. In fact in the install sheet for di this is what they tell you to do with the keys so I followed suit.
The chip has the website address at the bottom of it so that is how I knew where to look for the install

Should I fully discconnect them + and - and how long should I have them off before reconnecting everything?

If that fuse is fine, you may have a pcm problem, it protects the PCM. If it turns out it's fried, pick up a later model year PCM, not from the dealer if you can find a used one. Later model years have a updated PCM, they are better than the ones in the early 99.

Check the plug to the PCM on the firewall to make sure it's seated and the bolt is tight.

Would there be a problem if the screw was not tight.
I orginally tried to unscrew from the firewall and remove the connection that way to completely remove the pcm. It is sooo hard to get any tool down there to loosen the screw that I eventually gave up and realized that I can just pop the cover and install the chip that way. I figured the connection would be good being that the truck had the chip previously.

Also on the pcm. since it is an early 99 is it a xle4? are all early 99s the same pcm?
There is one on ebay with an update that I will get if so.

D/C the fuel heater in the fuel bowl, it worth a shot to try it before buying a PCM. You also might want to try scanning for codes before ponying up for a PCM.

Wondering if the chip was installed correctly the first time, before you bought the truck? Are the printed circuit board connnections whistle clean?

Just throwing out an idea.

Shouldn't matter Scott. The stock PCM should work without the chip in any situation.

Mine is xle too, check that bolt if you tried to remove it. I didn't know you could pop the cover with the bracket that holds the pcm under the dash still on..

So i think xle is for all early 99's.
And yeah I just popped the black cove off, I unsrewed the screws that hold the computer in inside and then just popped the cover off.
Any ideas to "reset" the computer to have the truck start again.

Unhook batts overnight is worth a try.

With batteries disconnected, do a load test on each battery seperatley. if they check good then reconnect cables making sure all connections are tight, and try again.
I know it sounds like a huge coincidence, but if the truck will turn over but wont crank more often than not its the batts.

I will unhook the batteries, but I had both of them replaced last week so they are new and good. The battery gauge shows they have power also.
Is this the way to clear the pcm if the chip did trip anything.
I know on most cars unhooking the batteries sets everything back to normal mostly.
The truck will crank fine just not turn over, the wait to start light will not come on and the water in fuel is not on either which has been on since I got the truck. I've already had it checked and it is the sensor. just need to replace it

For disconnecting the batteries can I just disconnect the neg terminals or should I do everything

And seriously thanks to everyone that has helped out so far. I'm fairly new to the site but I appreciate the support of such a great community

Disconnect the fuel bowl heater located at the back of the fuel bowl, it sounds like since it was messing up before, its now starting to mess everything up.
