Whistling noise in engine compartment???

I am getting a whistling noise from inside my engine compartment. I searched here and took some of the info and inspected my headers and up pipe to look for cracks but everything seemed OK. I am thinking a vacuum hose maybe. Where do I look for these? THe sound seems to happen only under small to moderate load and comes in short pulsing bursts while accelerating or during deceleration.

Any help please???????

Do you see any coolant drops around the degaus bottle? Also, I sometimes get a whistling noise when I extend my mirrors out when the air hits it just right, it's not real loud just annoying if you have the window rolled down. I thought it was the dreaded "tea pot" whistle due to head gaskets but the whistle goes away when I push the mirrors in.

Might be the head gaskets? Anyway to check for sure?

I would have expected the whistle at full load as well for the gaskets to be blown......

Just checked and there are drip marks running down the degas bottle. They are dried up enough I can not rub them off. Coolant level seems a little low as well.

When my gaskets blew my truck would defuel due to overheating while towing 4500lbs. Empty, it would run hot, fan would come on sometimes, plus you could smell coolant while stopped. There were water dropplets around the outside of the degaus bottle... it never "puked" coolant like other people have experienced. I was loosing coolant in the degaus bottle and would have to add a half gallon every once in a while until it was fixed. Hope this helps.

It sounds like the head gaskets. I would look into the extended warranty that people have been talking about on here. It will cost a lot less than paying for the gaskets out of pocket. It's worth a try.

I have the extended warrenty. I'll bring it in and have them take a look. I was just trying to save $100 hoping it was a vac line.

Any other comments???

its not a vacuum line. not enough volume from the pump. more than likely it is the egr up pipe being a 05. done several of these.

I have the EGR disconnected right now and since I bought it 20,000km's ago. The fact that it is in the exhaust stream will my MBRP with cat and muff in cause any warrenty issues???

Just went for a ride

So I just unscrewed the degas cap and there was alot of pressure in there. Put cap back on and went for a ride. Whistling gone for first little while and then came back after 10-15 min. I think the whistling is coming from the degas overpressurizing.

If it is the EGR up pipe, should I plug it back in before bringing it in or does it matter for warrenty????

Can a blown egr cooler cause headgaskets to blow in any way? When my egr cooler failed it sent the Water Temp gauge to about 3/4 on the stock gauge. Can overheating cause the gaskets to fail or weaken? The tech checked my heads and they were not warped. Thank you.

it could be the cooling system causing this but i since you say small load, it tough to say. however it could be heads/gaskets causing the excess pressure causing the whistle.

highly doubt it. heads can cause a egr cooler to fail though.

I just had my head gaskets replaced and the EGR cooler. The whistle is louder than ever now.
