there is an idler pulley on the end of an aluminum arm that is the belt tensioner. there is a 3/8 square hole in the arm by the pulley. you use a breaker bar to compress the arm spring, then jump the belt off the pulley.--- i think you have the alternator that bolts to the top of the mount with three bolts from the top. just take out the three bolts, slide to the side, and get the wire harness off the back.-- install the new alternator in rev.
What makes you think the alternator is bad? Did you load test it, or are you hearing a squeal and assuming its the alternator. If it's a squeal, it could just be the tensioner. Also, if you do replace the alternator, remember to disconnect the battery first.
Hope the following steps will help you out: 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Disconnect wiring at voltage regulator. 3. Remove attaching nut and wiring terminal from alternator output terminal. 4. Disengage drive belt from alternator. 5. Remove alternator mounting bolts, then the alternator. 6. Reverse procedure to install. 7. Torque bolts to 30-40 ft lb.
And I must agree that the Ford Explorer do not have a 3.8L option.
