this is what I'll be getting when my alt dies. I talked with the boys at DC and they recommended this one. It has all the good stuff of the 270 amp unit but its "detuned"

Check what it would cost to have yours rebuilt locally at a auto electical shop. Could be under $100. My local guy said he could also redo the winding to put out more amps but he doesn't recomend it. I wouldn't fool with the china rebuilds.

Another fan of a local rebuild, support and keep some of your money in your community. Like SpringerPop said to me, along with other members here, your alt. is a good one Jordan, keep it, it lasted this long..

From what guys say here, unless your going to power things up, meaning running lots of electrical assesories then doing a dual conversion would be an option, pricey too, but getting your single alt. would be just fine.

I plan on building or putting a bumber on with 4to6the driving lights on and 2in the rear bumper and a sound system but just a mild one with new door speakers and one 10in sub and i dont want to burn alts up because im pushing them to hard i burnt 2up in my 79 with all the gauges and 2 300wat raly lights before i went to a msd altanator so i just want to stay away from that do you guys think one stock alt will be okay with the lights and sound system i no these trucks use some juice be them selves

I'd go with the dcpower one if I was doing what you are. I believe they rebuild yours or you can buy outright. Its close to me in riverside.

I have the dc power, no issues. Rebuild is another option if you can find and if they are good. I couldn't find anyone at the time, so I went with dc power. Too many stories about failed box store alts.

Nations Auto Electric has made a special bolt on replacement which runs about 185 amps, is brand new (not rebuilt), US built, no shimming required for install, no new belt required, and was designed specifically for Ford applications. I've been running it on my wife's Ex for about a year with absolutely no trouble at all.

You could also get one of these. The downside was that the bracket kit to fit the 7.3 was almost a grand but it works great. ZENA® Products

Gates Gatorback, belt, or OEM. Many have tried others. I like the gatorback because it is designed with shallow grooves that will actually wear correctly for any deviations you might have in pulley "VEEs"

Are any of these high-amp units too much for the stock wiring/charging system? what is the amperage of a stock unit?
