Hello all:
Over the weekend I noticed a new noise in the truck. I am now getting more noise from the transmission. The noise is not very loud and is worst when I have the truck ideling in neutral. As soon as I push in the clutch, it goes away. I am concerned that I may be losing bearings on the input shaft. On the other hand, I know these gear boxes can be noisy in general. The truck has 95K on it. The trans / clutch has never been touched with the exception of an oil change 15k back. I use the truck to pull a 5th wheel so the entire truck gets a moderate workout on a regular basis.
it could also be the clutch disc my 95 f250 powerstroke is losing all the springs in the clutch hub and making a simalare noise that goes away when you push in the clutch but everything still works fine
I have the same problem, a rattling noise in idle that goes away when the clutch pedal is pressed. My ZF has 157k miles, but the clutch and related components only have about 1k miles.
Hello all;
After driving the truck a short distance last night. I got to playing with the noise a little. It has gotten distinctly louder over the weekend. It is a smooth sound like a wherring. Thats what makes me think of bearings. On other vehicles, I've lost clutches, had 2 piece fly wheels come apart, ate throw out bearings, knocked springs out of clutches, etc. This is not like that. I am thinking this is in the trans, not the clutch.
How difficult is it to put a set of bearings onto the input shaft of the trans? Anywhere I can look to get instructions? Anybody done this before? I would prefer to not have to pay for a complete rebuild as the prices I have seen are around $2000. That leaves me doing it my self or finding a junk yard special.
The noise you're hearing may be gear rollover. It's normal with a ZF, although I saw a ZF service manual that said a two-stage clutch will quiet/eliminate it. The ZF I swapped into my Bronco (with a low-end Zoom clutch set) makes the same whirring bearing type noise.
Which begs the question, what the heck is a two stage clutch and where can you get one? Is there an equivalent aftermarket replacement available?
