Hi, im new to the forum but I have been having a problem with my SUV for some time now. I have a 98 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6, 2WD, 5spd manual transmission. It has 125k miles on the stock clutch. For months now I have had what I consider to be a whining noise, almost like the sound of an air intake but not as deep. Im not sure if the noise can be heard outside the truck, but it is quite loud inside the cab. The noise is heard when I am in gear (not first gear but all the rest) and am pushing on the gas. If i push in the clutch or throw it in neutral and push on the gas, the noise isnt heard. Its only heard when im in gear and pushing on the gas. It has been making this noise for awhile now, but has been getting louder as time has went on. I was wondering if anyone else has had a problem similar to this or if anyone knows what the problem would be. I have heard from friends that maybe it could be the clutch, but its not slipping and I get into gear fine. Could it be the throw out bearing? Any information would help. Thanks!
Sounds like the throw out bearing. If you replace it do it all clutch, pressure plate, and have the flywheel turned. Make sure to get the shim for the flywheel if you have it turned.

How loud could the throw out bearing be? The noise is quite loud inside the cab and being that its loud inside, im sure it can be heard when im drivin down the street. Thanks for the info.
Throw out bearing can be quite loud if it is going bad. If it turns out to be the throw out beqaring and you are going to replace it, replace the slave cylinder also. Get the bench bled unit from Ford. It will cost a few dollars more but in my opinion it is worth it. I had a bad experience with an after market unit and four good expereinces with the Ford units. Clutch, pressure plate are your call but since you are in there you may want to think about it. My Ranger and Explorer clutches need to be replaced at about 130-140K miles.
Most important, check fluid level in the transmission ASAP. There are three rubber bushings in the top of the transmission that will harden and leak ever so slowly. You may not notice the leak it is so slow. Eventually the transwmission starts to make noise (and this may happen over a long period of time) then something breaks. I found out the hard way with a 5 spd on a 4wd tranny in a 96. New cluster gear and pilot shaft.
