I just got a call from my wife. My daughters 2000 Mustang just rolled down hill and into our pond. It went almost completely under. No full coverage insurance.
What can I do to salvage this care. We just bought it for her?
Pull out the interior, including headliner, so it can dry. DON'T try to start the engine without changing the oil and pulling the spark plugs. While plugs are out turn it over to make sure no H2O is in the cylinders. Squirt a little oil into the cylinders. Check transmission for water. Dry out/change air filter. Check cabin filter if so equipped. Check differential fluid. How long was car under? It might be a "crap-shoot" if the computer and other electronics are ok.
Major things are too change the engine oil and transmission fluid asap, disconnect every electrical connector you possibly can, take out the PCM, and if its possible, open it up to let it dry.
What I would do is drain every fluid in the vehicle. (engine, trans, rad, power steering, differential, brake fluid ect...you name it)
Remove the plugs, air filter, coil packs, battery. Make shur all the water is taken out of the cylinders.
Strip out the interior, put everything somewhere where it can dry. Pull out the dash and disconnect everything. (don't forget to label everything,) and use compressed air to get rid of all the water in the electrical system. look for anywhere in the car where water can sit and get rid of it.
Interior is out. Battery was diconnect within 20 minutes of it enteriing water. It was only in less than 20 minutes. My son had to do in and hook a cable to it. Someone with a jeep with winch stopped and helped. Thanks everyone for the help. I will call my insurance agent tomorrow. He is my brother-in-law and handle all our insurance except health. Good guy. We'll see what he can do.
One of the best ways to dry things is to soak them in alcohol.
Electronics with little chambers, complex parts with areas you can't reach - pour on pure alcohol (like rubbing alcohol).
The alcohol displaces the water from the surface because of lower surface tension and the water is carried away. Then the remaining alcohol evaporates.
Careful though - highly flammable and don't breathe too many vapours.
Talked to my mechanic this am and he gave me the low down. Been working on electronics all morning with alcohol and electrical contact cleaner. Also cleaning all connections I can find. Got the fluids bought to change ALL fluids and yes I know now that I will have to drain the diff by taking it apart. Thanks again everyone.
When I get this thing going and my little girl is smiling, it will be worth it all. Daddy's can do anything!!!!!!!!!!!!
