Did the 351 m and the 400 have a optional place for a front oil dipstick?
I just put a crate 351M in my 78 Ford F150 and after running it oil came out of this hole on the front passenger side of the motor below the head. On the original motor this whole was plugged with a recessed rounded type plug and my dipstick is on the drivers side.
Just curious to know what I might do to plug this if this was a front dipstick option!
My 78 F-150 w/ the 351m had the dipstick on the drivers side of the motor.
I've never seen one have the dipstick in the front.
Of course if the hole thats leaking on yours is tapped u can thread a brass plug or bolt into it.I would find out what its for though first I don't have any idea.
Maybe a bolt is supposed to be in their for a smog pump bracket or something
On my '73 Galaxie with a 400 (same block as your 351M) the dipstick is on the front passenger side. So yes you could have the dip stick in one of two places. I believe the dipstick is on the passenger side for cars and the drivers side for trucks, typically.
The 351M/400 motors with a front sump oil pan as found on the cars and 2 wheel drive trucks have a dipstick that goes through a hole in the front passenger side of the block. That hole is plugged with a pipe thread plug (size?) in a motor with a rear sump oil pan as found on 4x4's.
Thanks for your feedback guys. Other than this minor setback "project red rock" engine swap went well. The only performance mods I done are flowtech headers and cherry bomb glasspacks. It sounds really good.
