oil dipstick ?

i have a 77' f150 with a 351M that i am positive of, and a 79' f150 that says on the VIN has the same motor. the 77' oil dipstick is on the drivers side beside the motor, but the 79's stick is on the front of the engine by the alternator. is it really the same engine with different dipstick locations or has someone swapped the motors????

did they make a 400C? or just a 400M? because i was going to take the oil pan off and check the code to see if it was 351 or a 400. so does that mean that i could take the valve covers or the heads off to see if they are the cleaveland head?

The heads are the same for a 351C and 351M and 400.
They quit producing the 351C in the states in 1974. They were never put into trucks.
The 460 has the dipstick in the timing cover behind the waterpump. How many bolts are in the valvecovers in the 79?

well the truck is at my parents house, but i kinda have a idea that the motor has been swapped cuz the motor mounts are home made on the bottom, there is no sticker on the blue valve covers, but i will hafta count the bolts tomorrow. i know it has a DEEP growl to the exhaust too.

how much bigger is the big block vs. the 351-400??

the blocks look the same. also the 400 is just a 400 not a 400m.

2wd 351m/400 trucks had the dipstick in the block (on the front of the block behind the alt.) and 4x4 trucks have the stick in the pan on the drivers side. if the trucks not 4x4 it could be a 2wd transplant!

335 series motors have 8 valve cover bolts..... and a 12.7 inch intake width for the 351M and 400, the clevelands intake is narrower.

429/460's have 7 valve cover bolts, I believe its 4 on the bottom and 3 on the top.

My 429 came out of a car, it has the dipstick up front passenger side by the alternator....

hope that helps, there is a sticky up at the top f this forum that has more identification information......
