Question Loud rattle/scraping noise

I'm asking on behalf of some one else who doesn't know what is wrong with a 1995 powerstroke diesel.

From the noise it was making and the location of it, he suspected the turbocharger, but that seems to be ruled out, at least for now. I know this is very vauge, but he's telling me of a loud rattling or scraping noise from the rear of the engine (location is a best guess). The oil pressure is still good and the engine idles well, again his description. This began within a week and finally got worse while taking a turn at low speed, now its so bad that he had the truck towed rather than risk driving it. He is also wondering if this could be caused by a bad clutch. My understanding is that ford used a dual mass flywheel on this transmission and it is prone to failure. Could this cause such a noise?

I offered to take a look at it tomorrow since I have some spare time. I know this isn't much to go on but can any of you offer some advice on what to look for and what the problem might be. I know a little about the powerstrokes and theory of operation, but most of my experience is with the older mechanical 6.9L diesels (very different animal).

sounds like a clutch issue or input bering/bushing either way it sounds like you have to remove the trans good luck

I'm sort of leaning toward that as well right now, but thought I'd ask in case there is something else less obvious.

I didn't ask that directly, but I did ask if the noise follows engine speed and he said no. If its true than that would really have me stumped.

maybe the sleave on the trans that the clutch bearing rides on or internal trans issue?

Found the problem.

The dual mass flywheel springs flew out got shreaded, and were swimming around in there. After he started it up, I went strait to the inspection cover on the tranny. Pulled it off and and mangled pieces of springs fell out. The scraping noise was a piece that was stuck between the flywheel and the inspection cover. There may be other damage, but can't tell yet. The truck was driven after I picked the loose pieces out and seemed to be normal enough (he took it easy).

I offered to replace the flywheel and clutch, since the tranny has to drop anyway. We are leaning toward getting a single piece aftermarket flywheel since I know the DMFs are prone to this. Time for another thread.....
