trans temp install problems/questions

I just installed my new DP-tunes and I also wanted to install a trans temp in the overhead pod. I already had boost and exhaust on the a pillar. Anyway, I can not do a mechanical gauge because the lead is not long enough. Now I have the electric trans temp installed and it is running very hot. I dont trust the gauge. 10 minutes of easy driving and I am pushing 250 degrees. What did I do wrong. Any thoughts??

My only thought is maybe the sensor is bad? Just guessing. I'll bump you back to the top.

Where do you have the sensor installed? Mine is in the test port on the side of the tranny, certainly don't see 250deg at all - I vote for bad sensor. You could unscrew the sensor and dip it in some liquid of a known temp (maybe heat up some water with a kitchen thermometer) to test it....

My tranny temp runs pretty cool at 125 for the most part... I've seen it hit 150 a couple of times.. I would agree with the other guys... Bad sensor !!

Test in the water is an easy fix. Checked numerous thermostats with that trick. Give it a try.

I had a similar problem after installing my Dripricol tranny temp gauge. It turned out to be my battery. I replaced both batteries and the problem went away. My batteries were pushing 5 years old. I have heard of strange problems with people's vehicles caused by a bad battery.

I've read that it's not unusual for the check valve in the tranny bypass line to get weak and open prematurely so that little if any of the tranny fluid gets circulated through the cooler! Your rapid warm up to 250 F sounds like that might be your problem, or possibly a clogged cooler?

Ditto on the clogged cooler. My son found that problem when he had his transmission flushed. Totally plugged. That was a year ago. He just had his transmission rebuilt last month but it had over 200K on it.

This may take a little time to diagnose. You will have to do each suggested remedy to see if that is the problem. Hope you find it soon.

I have it installed on the test port towards the front on the drivers side. Last year I installed the true cool. I almost forgot - this trans only has 40k on it.

I know this isn't scientific but I said what the hell. I drove 6 miles round trip taking it easy to top off with diesel. I got home and crawled under the truck and my M/H pan was hot to the touch. I could hold on for 5 seconds or so. I also noticed the front drive shaft was hot. The front diff and the transfer cases where cool. Could the trans be putting off so much heat that it would make the front drive shaft hot?

Sounds like you need to take it to a good tranny shop for a diagnosis. May have to check the flow to the cooler.

The front drive shaft could get heat from the exhaust pipe if that is where it was hot. If the transfer case and front diff were cool, then the heat to the drive shaft would have to be radiated to it from some source not directly connected to it.

How long was the warranty on the transmission? Did they put in a new torque converter and flush the cooler when they put in the new tranny? If they used the old torque converter, the clutches in it could have been coming apart and have since plugged the cooler and who knows what else. Might need to pull the pan and see what you find.
