with the valve covers off, where do i look to see if they are oiling. I was told I should have a mess if i'm running the motor with no valve covers. I am not making a mess with out the valve covers. Is it possible i'm running to light of an oil?

...what's everything look like with the valve covers off ?

Is there alot of built up sludge in the valve covers ?

Any Rust ?

Is there caked on crud everywhere on the rockers ?

You can see the drains in the head for oil return. What's going on with those?

I am guessing this motor ran well for you and then started the ticking at some point.

No crud. I can see the little oil drain holes, but nothing is running through there.

Ok, i changed the oil to 15W40. It has made a difference. My question is this, should i always have oil in the filter. I took off the filter, and there was no oil. I put on a different filter, and ran the motor for about five minutes. I immediately removed the filter, no oil to speak of. there was a little bit, but not enough to even pour out. The inside was empty. With the lack of oil in the valve train, filter, i'm starting to think i have either a bad oil pump, or bad oil pressure.

I talk to the guy i purchased it from, he knows his employee put in a cam and redid the seals in the top half. He can no longer contact the guy who built it. I have a gut feeling i'm not getting enough oil to the rockers.

Pulled the oil filter, started the motor, and no oil cam shooting out of the oil adapter, i'm guessing with my little bit of knowledge, that means the oil pump is shot. I have one in my parts 360. Unless i installed the oil adapter filter wrong, i'm guessing I might have figured it out. So what major damage ma I have done

Your lucky it didn't blow. Get an extra quart of oil if you can and squirt it on all over the place up in the crankshaft/rods just before you put the pan back on. I would add the four quarts from the top on each bank before putting the valve covers back. And try to prefill the oil filter as much as you can. Just an idea. And a messy one. You can pre-oil through the distributor hole too, with a drill and socket. ???????

Hopefully it'll all hold together for ya

F100/350's take 6 quarts of oil with a filter change, cars take 5 (except 4 cylinders).

Need a shorter filter because of clearance problems?

Use FL-300 instead of FL-1-A.

Ford introduced the FL-300 oil filter in 1975 expressly for that purpose.

If everything is working correctly, there should be oil running out of the rocker arms when the motor is running. If there isn't, then I wouldn't run the motor any more until I figure out why, because it's a sign the motor is self destructing. You can check the oil pump by removing the distributor and spinning the oil pump with a drill or by hand. The distributor has a hex shaft that comes out of the bottom of it and engages with the oil pump; remove the distributor, put a hex socket the same size as the hex shaft coming out of the distributor with an extension down into the distributor hole and spin it with a drill or by hand. When you do this, oil should run out of the rocker arms.

The weights of oil you're running wouldn't have any effect on this problem. It sounds like something has happenned to your oil pump. How clean is the motor inside? If it has a lot of crud built up everywhere it's possible the oil pickup in the pan is clogged...

One more thing about testing the oil pump, tape the socket/extensions together so nothing comes apart and falls into the motor, you don't want to make more problems than you already have.

Might be the oil relief spring has broke/stuck(inside pump) and it's mostly bypassing? It's a thought. Might have a piece of crud stuck in pump and holding valve open?

If you replaced the oil filter housing, did you put the gasket on correctly? Might have the holes blocked off?

Spinning the pump manually is a good start to see if you can get it to do something. This will keep from burning up everything from lack of oil from running it.

Tonight i'm pulling the oil filter adapter. I'm sure i put the gasket on right, but it's easier to check that then the oil pump. It could be pluged, but before i put it in, i took the oil pan off and cleaned it out. I guess i made a rookie mistake and didn't replace the oil pump. I ordered the ford big block book but it is not going to be here tonight. I have to get my truck running bear season opened last week. I'm already behind.

I have a few questions about the oil pump:

Would the gasket affect the oil to the top half of the engine?

Is there a timing issue to consider when installing the new one?

Does anything besides the oil pan need to come off?

Where do people put the spacers? I'm thinking on the motor mounts.

Where is the best place to put the jack? All i have right now is a bottle jack.

I want to thank everyone here for all there help.

The oil pump looked new. I couldn't get a drill on it in the truck. I pulled the oil adapter, and yes I installed it right. removed the oil pump, put a drill on it outside the truck, and everything worked fine. Newbie mistake: The drill will shot oil all over, and if you are in the way, it will be all over you. Go ahead and laugh, i am now that i'm cleaned up. Anyway, installed the same oil pump, started it up, and I now have knock up by the number 5 piston. I'll be pulling the fuel pump tomorrow. I can actually hear the exhaust now. Maybe someday I will get to share the info with someone here. Thanks for all your help!

Why wait for "someday".

What was the cause of the oil starvation ?

Enjoy

I don't know. No oil was pumping so i removed the oil adapeter, and reinstalled it. still no oil pumping. Removed the oil pump, bench checked it, and it worked fine. Before i put the Oil pump back in, i used a hose and forced air throught the hole to the oil adapter and reinstalled. Put everything back together and it works wonderfuly.

The only thing i did different was i put some oil down the dizzy shaft like someone told me to do. Then it just worked. I wish i knew more. The oil pump was the issue but i don't what i did.

With any luck the knock at the front will be the old fuel pump i put in.
