I had a small problem that has become a MAJOR problem.
My ignition (key) stopped working forcing me to start the truck at the solenoid. This happened about 3 weeks ago. That is minor problem to me.
Today the problem has gotten worse. ALOT worse.
Now I can not shift gears at all. The tranny shifts fine under the truck. It appears that it is bound up in the column. I could find no reference to the workings of the column in my Hayes manual. So I ask........ is the column a hard thing to work on? Or should I send to a pro?
Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be? Or how I should resolve it.
You have a problem common to these trucks. Your ign. key barrel turns a small gear wheel which meshes with a toothed rack. This rack is connected to piece called the ign. switch actuator. This in turn is connected to a rod which runs the steering column to the electrical ign./start switch. Unfortunately the ign. switch actuator also locks the trans. shift lever in Park. Quite often when they break the actuator not only fails to operate the ign./start switch but will not allow the shift lever to come out of Park. The ign. switch actuator is only about $6 but takes a couple of hours to fit. You will have to pull the steering wheel then the turn signal switch plate (3 screws) and then slide the steering column cover off. You will then see the actuator. It is a real PITA to fit, it`s up to you if you want to leave it to a shop.
