I have a problem with my steering column. It is clunking around. I guess that there is some type of bearing in there but have yet to check my repair manual. Has anyone rebuilt the column or should I just go to the junk yard and purchase a more recent column? I am also having a little trouble with the ignition switch lock being broken and the key being loose in the key hole. Everything else with the column works fine.
I would check the mounting bolts first...try the easiest stuff first! Columns can be a real pain when you go to a junkyard!
As for the ignition switch.....you can go buy a new one for some what cheap
OR...
you can do what I did and that is...I removed the ignition switch and 'shave'(as ricers like to call it) the steering column, then I mounted one switch on my dash that looks like an aircraft switch with the safety cover and it says "ARM" on it...and under my dash i mounted a rocker switch (that automatically springs back to off).
Now to start my truck I flip the "ARM" switch to turn on all electricity and then I reach up under the dash and flip that rocker switch to crank the 'Beast', hehe! I love it and it amazes my friends, lol (they are easily amused). Also serves as a theft deterrent
Seems like a lot of Fords have ignition lock problems. The one on my 91 didn't work right after I bought it, neither did the turn signal. I pulled the steering wheel and could see some broken parts so I got one out of the junk yard for $100.00. It took almost a day to go to the yard, pull the column, then put it in my truck. Not too much later the ignition started acting up again. Pulled it apart and saw more broken parts. This time I took it to a local garage and they fixed it for $60.00.
There is a bearing that can go bad but it sounds like your mounting screws might be loose. There are three allen screws that you might be able to tighten up. My original column was missing one of the screws.
If you just need to replace the ignition cylinder, thats pretty easy.
The '92-94 lock cylinders are known to come apart, but you can get a good aftermarket one from a parts store for under $20. Click my signature and look in the GP Pics album - there are a few pictures of a disassembled '96 column.
fishman,
A while back you posted about setting up your truck so you could start it with a couple switches, a toggle for power up and a rocker for starting. I was wondering if you or anyone else could help me with the wiring on that project, and maybe where I can find the right switches. Thanks.
Ya man...it is actually pretty easy. Took me like 2 hours to complete the project. I am at skool right now but later tonight when I get home i will give you wire colors and very specific info. You could keep your switch to turn on the power and use an auxiliary switch to crank the motor...my dad's 74 CJ-7 4x4 all-time-4x4 with auto is setup to crank with an aux switch.
