Hi All, I am looking for an aftermarket column with column shift for my 56. I have a GM column that I bought for it but I do not think I like the looks, it seems cluttered verses the Flaming River and Ididit colums. I am wondering if anyone has a used aftermarket column such as a paintable steel one that they may have pulled out and replaced with a chrome or stainless column. the new ones sure would take a hit out of my budget. what I need is a tilt with column shift. I know this may be a long shot but it has worked a couple times in the past, I will never know until I ask right? Thanks alot guys.

I understand the building on a budget. Two columns you might try looking for are 77-81 Chevy/GMC Van or 78-79 Ford Truck or Van with Tilt. I currently have a 83 E150 Van column. A friend of mine cut off the ignition and filled it so that I could continue to use the stock switch in the dash.. This column has the Overdrive detent and indicator for using an AOD tranny. Let me know if I can help you in Locating one. I am from Fort Wayne and will be going home for Christmas maybe I can bring you one. Email me at this user name on AOL.
Hello, Indy! I'm just north of you in the Lafayette area. I'll second tacson's recommendation for a '77-'79 Ford truck column. They are clean and relatively uncluttered, easy to find in the boneyards, have tilt and column shift with an integral shift indicator, no ignition switch as these trucks had their switch on the dash like these old ones did, and the length is about right as well. They aren't too difficult to mount either. I grabbed one for my '51 and it's going to be a great fit. The truck I swiped mine out of even had cruise with the buttons in the steering wheel. Normal wear parts are still available from the Ford parts counter as well. I know it's not an aftermarket as you requested, but I think it's a damn good compromise if you are on a budget.
Thanks for the info guys, I really appreciate it. I did not know we lived so close BlueovalRage, maybe our paths may cross someday, I figure I have about 2 years to go to get my baby on the road.
