Question about the overhead computer

I have a quick question - I have a '04 X - It has the 44 gal unleaded tank in it, My question is everytime I fill up it say 398 miles tell emtpy. And I am only putting in 38-39 gals each time. Is any way to fix this?

What is it exactly that you want to fix?

I don't see a problem. If I could 398 miles out of 38, 39 or 44 gallons, I would be one happy camper.

44 gallons takes me 350 miles at best. I am only getting 8.2 or 8.3 mpg consistently.

I believe it depends upon your average gas mileage. I read that it takes the average over a number of miles and computes it that way.

It's my understanding that the computer calculates mileages over the last 500. I believe that if you disconnect the neg battery terminal and then turn on the headlights (this disipates any residual power) - let it sit for about 15 minutes, then turn off the headlights and reconnect the batt terminal. This should reset the PCM back to scratch. For the next few miles, you'll notice that the tranny will shift a little firmer while the PCM's 'Adaptive Technology' re-learns your driving style. During this time, drive as normal as possible.

Few other points - I do this procedure everytime I change the air cleaner, clean the MAF or change the fuel filter.

Also - you may want to write down all of your radio station pre-sets... they will be lost.

after you reset the computer..it will start where you are...i think......the miles to empty will change over time also..if you go 15 miles per gallon..after a time the computer will reflect it..maybe..

Yeah. But that's because you have the magical diesel engine which is 50 times better than a V-10
and has enough torque to pull a fully loaded aircraft carrier uphill in 24" of snow!

I just spent $138 on a fillup today and it indicates 580miles...which is about right for driving we are doing.
