I'm down in Arkansas and I see the local SAM's Club has Rotella T 15/40 oil in the 5 gal buckets and the 6-1 Gal jugs. Is this the same rotilla I have been seeing in the post through out these forums? If it is, I want to make sure I bring some back to IL when I go back. Is $34 for 6-1 Gal or $29 for 5 gal a good price.
Once I go past 35K, I plan to go to synthetic oil. but until then I still want to change every 3K with dino oil. I still think my diesel still has not broken in. I've heard that when it breaks in, your milage goes up, but so far, mine has just gone down, down, down. I think most of my problem is with my foot, and next is the winter grade diesel. Thanks for your responses. I hope every one has a great New Year.
I saw the price of the rotella synthetic and about dropped a load in my pants.
I know the benefits of synthetic in a gas engine but I had heard that using it in a diesel was not worth it as you still had to change at same interval from the soot buildup. So is it really worth the price then? Comments??
I've got a 97 with just over 190,000 miles on it, and this will be my first try at a synthetic. After reading alot of different opinions and facts on this forum, I figured it was worth a shot. I can always go back if not satisfied, but have heard great things about synthetics (better mileage, easier starts, less wear, etc).
When I purchased my 2000 F250, it had come with 40K miles already on it. After much reading and research, I felt it would be good to switch to synthetic with a bypass filtration system. I primarily wanted to do this because of stopping oil buildup on the turbo, which I think is referred to as coking, or something like that. From what I found in my looking around, synthetic doesn't cause problems if you shut the truck off without letting it cool down first. It's more expensive than regular oil, but I can go longer between changes, so it works out the same.
The Rotella T 15w-40 that you are looking at will generally have lower wear metals across the board than most other oils including synthetics. About the only one that might do better would be the newer Delo 400 in CI-4+ and don't forget the plus part as it is a new formulation. It is a blend rather than a pure dino or synthetics. Synthetics will have higher wear metals but to keep it in perspective, Rotella will average around 15-20 ppms iron for a 5000 mile change and the Delvac 1, which is the best synthetic out there, will have 25-30 ppms. It does not mean that your engine will wear out earlier as most of the wear metals are from corrosion as PAO basestocks do nothing naturally for corrosion, seals,etc.. That is why they usually have a larger additive package. Unless you are planning extended oil change intervals, there is no advantage to synthetics. And if going to extended oil changes, get the by-pass filtration. Oil Guard, Amsoil, and FS 2500 will filter to the 3 micron range. Engineers agree that a particle of 40 microns will do damage to your engine. A micron is 1 millionth of a meter. Hope the info helps.
