You are confused as to terminology There was a time (prior to the Federal Motor Vehicle Act of (hmmm, was it 1964 ? ) when many states licensed cars and trucks by their ENGNE numbers (identification numbers stamped into the engine block by the original manufacturer of the engine. Obviously, this created a nightmare and great opportunity for thieves.
By the 1960's, the situation got so bad, that a NATIONWIDE law took effect, requiring that if a new car is to be sold in the United States, it must have an easily identifable number, visible from the OUTSIDE of the car, so that law enforcement can quickly and easily identify a car. Thus came the 'VIN' or "vehicle identification number".
The "VIN" must, by federal law, again, MUST be visible from OUTSIDE the car, right at the juncture of the windshield and dash-board, on the driver's side.
Of course a manufacturer is free to put whatever stock or inventory, model number, casting number, etc. on anything else he wants. The individual manufacturer is the one to ask as to what any number OTHER than the VIN number means.
sorry I went to international dealer for the pedistal O rings and new fuel filter the parts man said he needed the engine vin # to give me the right parts

dont be sorry - it isnt your fault. people like to throw words around to sound important. it is just human nature and the way things are. Kind of like saying "i am flying" when everyone knows "wink wink" you are RIDING as a PASSENGER in the back of someone ELSE's airplane. Kind of like tossing the word "classsic" around to sell a used car. Heck, I went to the supermarket to get some shoe-laces..no more shoe-laces. They now only have CLASSIC shoe laces.
The guy you talked to had the right idea, even if he wasnt too concerned with accuracy of speech - if you need parts for your ENGINE, he needs to know what its number is. If you needed parts for your transmission, same deal.
