I just drove a 2001 Limited 7.3 Excursion. It did not have the factory DVD system and had the rear ac controls up in the middle. In a situation like this, how do you add a dvd system? There are no headrests on the front driver/passenger seats so you can't add it that way.
Same issue here..
I have ordered headrest covers from a saddle maker. My dual DVD screens have a mounting plate with velcro strips to mount it to the headrest.
With a headrest cover with a integrated 3mm ABS plastic plate with corresponding holes to the velcro strips, I get a secured and good looking way to attach my screens.
Benefit.. easy to remove screens.
On the down side, Does not look as good as original mounted stuff..
I will post pictures as soon as I got them.
Btw. my screens are a kit (2x 8,5" screens/ dual player) from Nextbase.
I had the same problem with mine. I wanted to add a new dvd player to my vehicle. I have the old VCR down on the base. I was just going to mount a dvd player under the passenger seat and route the RCA plugs to the vcr and use the over head unit. To rip out the old and fab a bracket for the dvd player would take to much effort.
I have this pic, it's shows my old dvd set but the new one is similar except the screens are the players also. You can either watch the same movie or individuals. These are 7" screens, the new set has 9" widescreens.
sorry jan, its definately no 10 step install. more like a 210 step. most good stereo shops do the installs all the time. looking like @ $2000. for a pair of high quality monitors and a good dvd player. they also sell cheaper ones that are the monitor and dvd player in the same unit. that way you dont have to have another dvd player under seat.

At some point, it becomes cheaper to just buy each kid in back an iPod with video capability, if distraction is your main goal.
I'd be interested in figuring out where to look for a changer to work with my single-disc/single-cassette in-dash factory unit in my 2000 Excursion, which would keep the rear-seat controls allowing my daughters to control what they listen to without affecting what we hear in the front seat.
