The front tilt idea sounds good....but then again I'm a little bias. The kits they make for your truck are pretty nice and ALOT of folks have them. Of course if youwant to go nuts, youcan put in a full front tilt - tee hee.

It's been a long time since I had my 55 but something in the back of my mind remembers a picture of hand winding springs and a lot of blood.

I went with a single piviot forward tilt hood also. similar to RJ's but I ended up building my own hindges. It took many trials and errors before everthing lined up and proper open and close clearences.

For me it seems that the BMW double pivot style is kind of like a contraption, still have to do the “Effie Hood Pokie”

Just so you guys know. Lowering the hood on the 53-56 trucks has always needed the push down the corners part. You should be able to push down the front fro the center, while pulling out the safety latch. You will then (like the always are) need to push down the rear corners over the cowl. I've yet to ever see a mid fifty ford truck that this is not required. Even the new hinged you buy require this little dance. The problem is that it is a lot of hood to close, and they are long and wide. The hinges and springs are not big enough to do it. If the hinge is in good shape, and you have all the appropriate seals under there, the shouldn't lift when driving, at least if you're driving under 55 as they were intended. The hinges need to have another attaching point on the underside of the hood, a little further forward, and need a stronger spring (a long coil spring like on most other hood hinges) in order to close the hood properly by themselves.

I had to do that hood-adjustment-dance back in 1971 when I first got the truck.

Near as I can tell, tightening the springs on a jig only means it won't fall on your head quite as fast or as hard.

As for the hood 'lifting' at 55mph; if I ever get mine to go that fast, I'll let you know. Never has done it so far. (The rubber on the valance and all the other bumpers and stops and such really help with this issue, though.)
