Angry Now I know......

Folks, I know this is a dead horse that has been beat to a pulp too many times, but I feel the need to vent.
I now know why you see so many forward tilt hoods on the effies. When I bought "Someday" and the other 53 parts truck, the hoods were laying in the bed of both. I have been trying for 2 hours to get the thing bolted on and working with something that resembles "normal". I think that I have finally figured out how it is supposed to work, but still 4 out of 5 times have to do the "Effie Hood Pokie" I thought I had a briliant idea, install it without the hood springs and just use a prop rod, but alas, the hinges won't work that way either.
One question, how far are the hood springs supposed to be wound? Mine look to catch at either 1/3 turn or another 180* from that. At the first catch, the hood will attempt to close most of the time, but will not stay up. I have yet to force the springs to the next position.

Jeff, I have the same problem as you with my 56. My spring is wound the same as yours and it will not hold the hood up or bring it down. It's my understanding that mid fifties sells a tool Part # 82002 - $9.50 for tightening the coil on the hinges. Round looking tube thing. I think you could even fabricate a tool when you see what it looks like. I can't see how that coil can wind up any more. I was told if the spring does not hold the hood up, you may need to purchase new springs. I'm just using a prop rod on mine. Actually, I'm a little leery of that coil breaking and damaging something. A while back, I used gas shocks which mounted on the inner fenders and hood hinge. That worked nice and kept my hood up. With the new inner fenders, I decided I didn't want to drill holes in them so I'm back to the hood prop.

I went back and with the use of vice grips, got the other 1/2 wrap on the springs. It made the hood a little easier to raise and actually helped it lower, but still have to do the "Pokie", you know, lower the front then push down the right corner and then to the left corner. Time to start looking at forward flip kits, I think if I could see exactly how they are designed, I could build my own.

Well, Jeff, if I were closer to you , I could let you copy a new ccp ( MF # MMB ) unit I have in box until I need it. I have in storage shed up the hill about 45 minites from home. I can't get to it until warmer weather, but if nothing happens until them I can take pics and send to you via EM or something. BUT, I really think RJ has a better method and his is well doc't and pic't in his gallery.

Thanks Jon, I'll check out RJ's gallery. If I need pics of your setup, I'll let you know.

Jeff, a lot of guys use the BMW setup for the reverse tilt for their hood. You might find one in a wrecking yard. It's the same principal. This might help also.

When I did my 55 I never could get the springs tight enough to keep the hood open. And worse, the thing would wait until I stuck my head in there to come down. Eventually, I just made a prop up out of a 3/8 dowel rod that flipped up and hooked into the underside of the hood. Worked great.

I am in the mist of actually taking my springs off the darn hinges and using a strut system from a donor vechile that would actually keep the hood up. I'll send some photos later of the system.

I've decided to just drive my '48 without the hood.

Seemed the only logical choice since the tree crushed the hood currently on it.

I just need a blower to make it justified, lol.

That's what I've been doing till last night, but I decided it was time to put it on. Maybe these hinges will loosen up and work a little better.

The bad thing about doing the 'hood pokie'....it comes down and looks OK until you get on the hiway. Air gets under the hood and raises right up!...Rod

iirc, AXracer has some good info on this. I'm going with the front tilt hood, but I recall it being said that you should be able to wind the springs by hand!! Also remember guys saying if the hinges are at all tweaked, you'll never get it to shut correctly. Since I lowered the truck, I hit my head constantly on the corner of the hood. Thats all the motivation I needed for the front tilt.
