I have been looking at trucks and the Bronco I like has this in it. What excatly is this engine? Is it a 351w with a 4v intake and carb on it or is just a 351m or what? If someone could explain this to me I would be grateful.
84 to 86 trucks and broncos were available with an optional 351w ho motor that came with a cast 4bbl intake and holly carb.
i have an 84 bronco and an 86 f250 with that combo.
The 5.8l 4v is quite a nice engine in my opion. It was offered in trucks from 1984 1/2 through 87, when it was replaced by the 351 EFI. THe compression ratio is 8.8:1, but some reference manuals like to say that it is 8.3:1. The HP for it was generally about 210 net ponies, normal 351 I believe was about 190. So yeah, it has some improvement because of the Holley 4 bbl carb, and a hotter cam.
Yes, the intake manifold for the 351w is wider than that of a 302, also another way of telling the difference is the 351w has a taller deck height over the 302, this is why headers for a 302 wont work well on a 351, despite the fact that the heads they use are the same. Another way is the factory heads will have on the underside of them a number cast into them, mine read 351 for good example.
I hope this helps with your questions, even though I just gave you more information that you were looking for, maybe I was able to help somebody else out in the process
