Does anyone know how to identify a 351C, 351HO, 351CJ by the block numbers? I have a 72 351 4V, 4 bolt mains, 4 barrel heads, cast iron intake. Don't know if it's a 351C 4V, 351HO, 351CJ.
Nope! Block #s will be the same. Its the head #s you need. HO would have adj. rockers, CJ and 4V are the same thing after 71, 71 actually being the only year CJ was so named. So that being said, you my have a HO if you have adj, rockers, otherwise you have a good 72 4 bolt 4V. Pop a cover and see

Look at the tag held down by the same bolt that holds the coil down (if it is still there). On it is an engine code which you can decode to tell you the exact engine. Please let me know if you need help decoding the number, as I have a book. They are probably online somewhere - such as one of the mustang sites. Based purely on numbers shipped, you probably have a 351CJ or 351-4V. If you've got the 4V it is actually higher performance/compression than the CJ!

Most of the 351-4V and 351CJ engines had 4-bolt mains as well, as long as those engines were shipped (1973?). From what I have read, since the 2-bolt mains were so strong they did not worry if they had to ship some of the perfomance engines with 2-bolt blocks when 4-bolt blocks were out of stock. I would not be too surprised to see some of the 2V engines with the 4-bolt blocks either - since they could easily substitute depending on what they had on hand.
There are no hard-and-fast rules either regarding casting dates and what years certain parts or even engines might be found. For instance, if they got to a new model year and an engine/intake/head/etc was supposed to be discontinued - they would keep stuffing them in until they ran out.
