I replaced my shocks today and noticed a fluid that appears to be slowly leaking from my passanger side hub. It's in the front of the truck. It looks as though its coming from inside the axle and it smells like gear oil. Any ideas on what this might be?
P.s. checked the front diff and it doesn't appear to be low. And I noticed the black rubber? seal is loose and freely spins on both sides of the truck but only the passanger side leaks
Here are some pictures of where it's leaking from. I am horrible at explaining the situation.
I don't know much at all about 4x4 as This is my first one. But from what I've read on this site and the internet The "seal" black rubber piece is just to prevent dust from entering the axle and that it's not that im portant.
Is there another seal closer to the front diff that would be causing the leaks?
Yes, the outer seal that you can see is only a dust seal, there are inner seals at the diff. housing that keep the fluid from leaking into the axle tubs. I personally have never changed them. So I'm not sure how involved it is to change them out.
Agree with Swine. Inner axle seal is the issue here. When you do one...you do both. Axles moved out about 6-10inches...and gears removed to gain access to the seal.
