I opened mine with a hacksaw and it was full of sandy crud and a toothpaste like sludge. Changed it twice since and I'm gonna do it again this weekend. Cheap insurance.
I just change 'em now w/o cutting them open. It's an outstanding addition to the 6.0 coolant system. Reasonably priced and easy to install. Outstanding return on investment with no downside at all.

I agree with you kepler4, this is a great investment. I think I will change the next filter a little sooner since this one was really "dirty". Thanks everyone for the input.
It is unlikely that you will find coolant filters at your basic local auto parts store. You would have better luck at a medium/heavy truck dealers parts counter or a medium/heavy truck parts supply store.
Have you tried Baldwin's dealer locator which can be found on the left side of the homepage to see if there is anyplace close to you?
I just looked at the filter that I removed, the one that came with the kit from dieselsite, and it is a B5134 not BW5134. Is the B5134 a charged filter?
Edit:
Never mind I just google'd it and found out it is the non-charged filter.
You can see when the filter needs changed by looking at the water flow in the degas bottle from the return hose. Also when the filter is cold to the touch compared to the radiator hose it is plugging up.
jmaskew. You can buy a filter cutter on e-bay or in the Summit catalog. They are a great evaluation tool for all vehicle sealed filters. We had one because of our race car.
After 5K miles I opened my Baldwin and found almost nothing. I put it on at 25K miles and checked it a 30K. Good Luck

I actually used a hack saw, it worked ok, just took a little while. Thanks for the info.
Does anyone know what the equivalent filter is for the Baldwin 5134 at Autozone, Checker, Pepboys, Walmart, etc? I have been looking online this morning and have had no luck. Thank you.
