1989 f350 5.8 fuel filter issue

this is a fuel injected truck. it has what looks like a fuel filter that has a screw on replaceable filter on the frame rail. the filter housing has 4 hoses connected to it. 1 fuel tank. it looks like it has a feed and return that both run through the filter housing. I'm having trouble removing the filter from the housing and trouble finding where to get a replacement filter...I did try a strap filter wrench but it may be too weak to budge the filter.. any help would be appreciated...

That is the fuel tank selector valve, not the filter.

There should be a filter mounted further forward in the frame rail.

I highly recommend you get a replacement filter before you remove the old one.

that's what I thought it was at first too.. this doesn't have 6 ports on it though.... just 4. and according to the manual 1989 f 350 5.8 fuel injected trucks have a fuel filter that screws on and off. this truck never had a second tank so no need for a fuel selector. so what am I missing here?

Since you have a single tank there is a Single Function Reservoir with 4 ports instead of the 6 port Dual Function Reservoir used on trucks with two tanks. As previously mentioned not all reservoirs have filters in them.

Some photos from Steve83:
