When I bought my truck the speedo was bouncing all over, so I ordered a new speed sensor for it, which everyone said was on the rear axle.
I went to replace it over the weekend and found out the one on the rear axle is completely different from the one I bought.
I went online to see what the deal was, and I found that the one on the rear axle is listed as the ABS Speed Sensor (found a pic), and there are also regular speed sensors listed.
What exactly is the deal with this? Is the regular speed sensor actually on the transmission? I've never seen an ABS speed sensor before.
On the '94 you have no cable, or sensor on the tranny/transfer case. The sensor on the pumpkin is both an ABS and vehicle speed sensor. On '91's and prior, that sensor was only for ABS, and you had a seperate sensor, and cable inserted into the tail shaft of either the tranny, or if 4x4, transfer case.
On the IDI trucks, rule of thumb.
1) if odometer is mechanical, cable speedo, with sensor on tranny
2) if odometer is digital, no cable speedo, and sensor is in rear end.
OH, and autozone will list a lot of parts from the 87-97 trucks, even though it is only used in certain years/specific packages. Take it back, have him sit on it, and tell you if it reads "rotation" correctly. Then go to NAPA. They have very simmilar part prices, but at least the guys behind the counter generally know what theyre talking about. The one here still uses paper catalogs most of the time.
I actually ordered this speed sensor from rockauto.com awhile back....dammit, now I see. What I got is listed as a "speed sensor," but the sensor I need is of course listed as an ABS sensor. figures...
And by the way, thank you sir! I didn't spend a lot on this sensor fortunately (like $12) and I think it's the same kind my Thunderbird takes, so no big loss. I'll see about picking up a Motorcraft ABS sensor.
on your 94 , the speed sensor in the rear axle sends its signal to the RABS , (rear anti lock) system ,then the speed signal to the PSOM (programmable speedometer/odometer module) it in turns relays speed signal to the procesor
the speed sensor you had already bought will fit the T-BIRD
