I am thinking of putting a Vortec V2 on my 05. I have found one for sale for about half of it's retail value (current owner says it has 3K miles - W/E caveat emptor).
What I was wondering about is how many is too many miles to slap a blower on? Once I get some feedback, I'll letcha know how many mine has on it.
mileage may be irrevelant to an extent. i wouldn't worry if its less than 100000 miles, and the maintenance has been kept up to par. you might want to beef up your tranny, but the motor should be fine unless you really drive it hard...
shift kits, something to firm up the shifts and eliminate some slippage. i know little other than what i've read. i've been tossing the idea around in my head from time to time as well but its more hassel than its worth for my daily driver...
there is no magic #. I personally would shy away if your over 75k. the engine can probably handle it, but the transmission is the most likely weak link.
give it a try. If I can keep my truck for 1 more year, I should be able to S/C it when another car becomes the family vehicle. its gotta stay usable and trouble free until I get a Expy/Tahoe though (twins coming)
OK, here's the dealio:
This truck is my daily driver and it has 122K miles on it, mostly highway (obviously, with that high of mileage in such a short period of time)
122 k miles is a bit much unless you like self destructing. tear her down, build her up, or find an engine from a wrecked truck with low, low miles. at least this way you have a standby in case something blows.
I called Vortec and they said, "Now way unless you're planning a rebuild shortly."
And I knew that. I just found this thing for a little over $2 grand and thought, "heeeeeeeeey" but really can't do a full rebuild. The wife would KEEL me!!
Four kids with the youngest being 5 months old, and I break off a 5 spot for a new blower, engine and tranny? Yeah, I think she'd kick a gasket over that.
I'll live with my full exhaust, CAI and Diable tuner
I've thought of that. Then I was like, "What's the point of a blower if you can't pour the coals to it every once-in-a-while?"
On the other hand, when the engine DOES fly apart (sooner rather than later), I'd be a power adder ahead on the rebuild.
Still be a tough sell to the missus. Thinking like that is what has kept me happily married for 16+ years at the tender age of 36.
She played along when I dropped $4K on my Stang's 306, then sold it two months later for a sweet Mach 1. She might castrate me in my sleep for spending 2-3 grand on a blower, then 2-3 grand more six months later when it slings a rod through the side of the block or leaves the tranny at an intersection. Bless her heart, I don't think I could put her through that.
