E303 cam

Hi guys, asking this for a friend. Will the Ford Motorsport E303 cam pass smog in a carbureted 5.0L? The cam has an E.O. # for fuel injected applications only. I think the rough idle will tip off the smog techs.

Thanks!

Barry

E303 cam

Probably not.

There are a few issues here. What year is your friends truck/car that he wants to install this cam in? And smog requirements vary state to state. Was it manufactured with EFI or carb? Cats installed? Does your state have visual inspection as well? If so, a 1988'ish and newer vehicle with a carb is a dead giveaway. Do they even smog check old vehicles, or carb'd vehicles? I haven't had a carb'd truck or car in years. I do like my Holley's in the boat though.

Did your friends vehicle pass the smog check with the current cam installed in it? W/carb? With Cats?

The E303 does have an EPA #, and I know of a few Mustangs easily passing the local smog check here in MD w/ the slightly lumpy idle E303, but the EFI/cats were still intact.

Tell him to give it a go. Worst thing to happen is that it fails and you take it home to "get it fixed". When I used to mess around with my Mustang years ago, I heard stories of guys who were running B303's pulling the spout and ensuring the engines were really warmed up when doing a smog check (simple tail pipe check) - and passing. But they were running EFI and cats. Cats help. I'm not sure if they would pass on today's roller-dyno smog checks.

If you're into swapping EFI/carbs/camshafts, ..... wait, no, we don't want you to join the ranks of the enviro-evil.

Try this question at the Mustang forum (www.corral.net).

Good luck.

Water 5 has an E-303 cam in his truck; 94 F-150 5.8, 65mm single bore throttle body, GT-40 upper and lower intakes, RPM Perf. heads and a few other things. He did pass the sniffer test last time out with that cam and stock cats.

If the engine was originally carb'ed and it still has the original carb emissions stuff functional, I doubt the E303 will hurt it on the sniffer. Overlap usually helps emissions, that's why the E303 has tight LSA angles. It may be cleaner than the same motor with original cam.

The engine only has to meet the requirements that were set for it's year. If you install an engine older of older specification than the year of the vehicle, they will flunk it, even if it's correct for a carb'ed year, however.

call compcam, tell them what you have , and let them know your running speed density as well. there are a few roller cams available that will work
