hutch mod
Will the throttle response be better, fuel economy be better, quite the engine down? Just wondering what the difference will be. Thank you, my pick-up is a 2002 f-250 stroker
The Hutch mod is two parts. One is modifying the pickup assembly and removing the mixing chamber inside the fuel tank. There is a "duckbill" looking flange that will sometimes suck air into the fuel lines when you drop to 1/4 tank or less. So if you notice that your engine runs louder when you are low on fuel, the Hutch mod will fix that.
The second part is the fuel lines between the tank and the pump. Ford uses the quick disconnects, which work fine when there's pressure, but are terrible when there is a vacuum. Since the quick disconnects are before the fuel pump, there is a suction happening, and air is introduced into the fuel lines at these quick disconnect junctions. Getting rid of the quick disconnects and replacing the connectors keeps the air out.
Another thing you can do while you are performing the Hutch mod is to also "Harpoon" the tank. There are two pipes, filler neck and vent tube, that drop down several inches inside the tank. If you reach inside with a PVC pipe cutter, you can cut off the pipes about an inch away from the top of the tank. This mod allows you to completely fill up the fuel tank faster. Stock tanks end up with foam filling the top of the tank, and when you fill up with fuel the pump will automatically click off when that foam reaches the top. Yet, if you are patient enough, you can fit another 3-8 gallons of fuel in the tank, dribbling it in bit by bit. With the Harpoon mod, you can almost completely fill the tank to the filler neck before the pump automatically clicks off.
