Do the axle seals just float in place? Do they have 2 sealing surfaces, instead of a seat surface and a seal surface? Looks kinda like crappy, if you know what I mean.
I know that there is a inner seal right in close to the differential, then there's a dust seal at the other end of the axle housing... (kind of holds it in place) Then there's the main axle seal where it slips in the big knuckle which the hub assembly attaches to... Hope that help a bit.. I just had my axles out a couple of weeks ago to replace the u-joints..
The inner seal probably doesn't have to be replaced.. to replace it you have to take all the front diff apart and get at it through there.. Only replace it if you have had a bunch of dirt in your axle housing... other people might have more to say about it.. I didn't replace my inner seal when I did mine either... Depends on what your problem was to start with ??
seals were trashed, scraped lots of dirt, rust, grease from axle tubes. Planning on getting grease changed when done. I didn't see any seal up in there when I was cleaning the m out, just an alignment cone. I was hoping that cone kept the majority out of the diff, but was going to drain and refill just in case.
Ya that cone is the seal... Its tapered like a cone so the axle slips in easier... Its normal to have a bit of dirt and oil in the axle tube.. Mine had it to !
