ive had my 7.3 for 8 years now and i am now ready for some mods, because im keeping it for the longhaul. i have a few questions, by putting various mods will it shorten the life of the diesel, will i run into trouble while towing, or will it greatly help my towing? and next is what to do to it ... i want better millage but also much better power, speed and sound so help me outt there are so many brands i dont know where to start
The mods should not affect the reliability of your motor unless you go completely nuts (big sticks, big turbo, etc) and should give you more grunt for towing. In this order, this is what I would do (and my personal plan of attack on my own truck):
6637 filter and CCV mod
4" exhaust- lots of choices here
Gauges- trans temp (auto only), boost, and pyro- DieselManor.com
DP Tuner- www.dp-tuner.com
If that's not enough, then it's time for some bigger injectors and bigger oil to feed them.
Well, I'm happy with the way I went. See my sig below. Like a totally different truck -- should be just as reliable, much stronger (and faster!), and better mileage (if I manage to keep my foot out of it!!). The only thing to worry about is the tranny. Which year do you have?
Just doing the 6637, foil delete, and the exhaust i noticed a huge difference in sound and power. The turbo sound is soooo cool i actually drive with the stereo off and the passenger side window down!
Gauges: ~$300
6637: ~$35 to your door
Muffler Delete: Free to a few bucks at your local muffler shop. OR...
Good mandrel bent 4" turbo back exhaust: ~$300 (better solution)
Tranny Kit or Custom VB: $70 shift kit up to ~$230 for a JW or BTS VB.
DP Tuner: $250-500+ depending on how many tunes you want.
Other stuff like in-tank mods, CCV, WW, etc. are good ideas and you can do those later. The stuff above will make a HUGE difference in your truck.
