50 years ago the nation was running on trucks that had half the HP they do now and nobody was complaining. The HP game is for marketing and boys.
That was 50 years ago. Today there is a Truck that has 381 HP and it gets the best MPG's of any 1/2 ton out there.
HP and MPG's are were it's at now and everyone that doesn't have it is getting killed.
Not that many more systems....its realativly simple....dodge offered it for a year or two as well with not much luck. If I read it right...fords going to be coming out with something similar on the 09...but again i might just be dreaming...
The Dodge Hemi still has MDS. They also have a 5speed auto already.
I'm not sure what kind of MPG numbers that the all new 09 Hemi is going to put down with MDS and 380hp with over 400lb/ft of torque.
Man, that lifetime warranty sure is tempting. But it would take alot to pull me away from a Ford truck.
i'd be super happy with 2-3 mpg better...even only on the highway.. i've put on 22000 miles in the last 9 months....75percent highway... with a 3 mpg increase i'd have saved 623 dollars on gas at 3.00 a gallon...which it hasn't been in a while....for those of us that drive alot....tiny changes make huge differences...

Ding, ding, ding!!
HP is mainly about marketing. 90% of the public will NEVER use that much power so it has mainly turned into a "my truck has more HP than yours does" game, mileage be damned. Remember, fuel consumption is determined directly by HP at a given RPM.
For me, I'd take 20 hp less if I could get an extra 5 mpg day in, day out. I'll never notice the missing 20hp, but I'd definitely notice the extra mileage every time I have to fill the tank.

Agreed, 2-3 MPG is significant. If for no other reason, that it sets a new standard for others to meet, and goes in the right direction.

Not entirely true.....engine design has more to do with it than hp at a certain rpm...
Look at cadilac's escalade, 18 mpg on the highway, 403 hp.....same highway mileage as our trucks but more hp.....Engine design has more to do with mileage than anything else. The problem is there are always trade offs....make an engine lighter and able to rev faster and you trade off reliablity, make it last 400,000 miles (4.9 I6) and it gets 200 hp barely...
Fuel economy will come with time as technology improves, lets just hope they're spending money under the table to r&d that technology...
The major callange with MPG VS HP is that you can't test fuel economy on a test drive (not nearly as fun even if you could), you can test power and thats always the first impression you get when driving a new car/truck for the first time. People usually make life desicions on a first impression, and power can set a good one.
Personally I woud buy the truck for power and towing and something that is easy and comfortable to drive around we your on vacation, and then a cheap little commutor car. Thats the best of both worlds. Or why doesn't Ford put in a performance engine, and then an engine that still does all right power wise, and gets 20+ mpg. But thats what the ecoboost engine will do.
ive heard the mds only helps for 2-3 mpgs.which i guess is better than nothing
Here in the mountains, the improvement is exactly 0 MPG with all of the vehicles with MDS. It only helps where you maintain steady speeds on flat roads with no headwind and no load.
