Your going to have to cut the frame. The wheelwell openings are in different locations between the long and shortbed. The longbed is longer between the cab and wheel opening.

Or

put something in the space between the cab and Flareside bed.

A toolbox would fit or a welder or even a bar-b-q grill. .

Or you could somehow extend the bed and have an 8 foot stepside... that could be cool... Get a dually bed and make it narrower.

Or find a stock 8 foot Flareside - 70s era, but these are getting rarer by the day.

You may have to clip rear frame (I didn't when put sleeper on a 89) but you can make the short bed line up with tires . The is a "Other make" truck around here That took and made a bedshaped fiberglass box (tool box)to extend his bed. Looks good. will

I would rather use the space too instead of chopping the frame.

Chopping the frame is pretty easy, I've done it on an old C10 long bed. You just section it, then weld it back together to the right length. If you make the right cuts and measure 7 times before you start chopping you can get get it done in a weekend. Someone did it on TV once. On trucks or something. Also, leaving a space b/w the cab and bed would look silly IMO, not to mention almost unusable.

My trucks never seem to have enough space.

I know cutting the frame is possible, but is the OP willing to go that far?
It is up to him, but overall, there are better solutions, don't you think?

As a painter and body man, I do not think there is a better solution, visually. You could build a custom box to go in that space with some pull-out drawers and whatnot. But just shoving something b/w the cab and the box would not be the best solution. If he needs space to put stuff, why not just leave the long bed and put a massive truck box back there? I'm just trying to shed light on the possibilities. Many guys shy from doing things that sound extreme like frame sectioning, but the procedure isn't that hard. Especially if you know how to weld or know someone who will weld for you for money (or beer ).

By better solution I mean getting a different truck, if he likes the look of the Flareside, and/or finding a better solution than (not) cutting the truck. Like I said in the first words in my first post - You are going to have to cut your frame(to make the bed fit). THIS MEANS TO MAKE IT LOOK GOOD.

Remember not everyone has the skills or tools to do such a modification, especially if the truck is a DD.

I do understand what you are saying and I hope the OP does too.
Keeping it simple is first, along with safety.

Like I said before IT IS possible. Yes I would fill the space with boxes or a welder, but that is what I would do to my own truck.

I am sure you have seen these, Now this is would be an extreme mod!

I like the box on that truck, very kewl stuff. Yeah, I think it would be wiser to just sell the LB and buy a different truck. No arguments from me in that respect, haha.
