Hi Folks! I need help identifiying my engine, can anyone tell me where to look for the casting #'s ,with some deciphering , so I can be sure and get the right stuff?
I thought i read on here the #'s were on the side of the block in the starter area?

Hillcapper,Thanks! I checked that page, but it appears the info is for earlier models.
Also I'm hearing the number 's I'm looking for are at the front of the block rt side at the cyl. head area?
This engine is supposed to be out of a 91 Bronco ,it is fuel-injected.
Any positive identifyers?
JUst want to make sure I get the correct rings, gasket set etc.
Thanks!!
My numbers on a 1994 roller were right behind where the starter would cover on the block. You might try googling the e9ae number. I'm not sure there would be much difference between a 89 and 91 5.0, but I'm not the expert.
Thanks there hillcapper! Yeah I've got a non-roller assy here, wish it WAS a roller though.I suspect it's a 91..not sure exactly what year the rollers came out...maybe 93? Do you have any idea if the rings ,gasket set is the same? Don't want to guess on this one..Thanks!!
E9 translates to 1989, the casting number scheme never changed, and the numbers were always found in the same general area on the block.. rear side near the back.
The casting number does not tell you the year of the vehicle it was used in, and castings were not changed every year so earlier casting are found in later vehicles. This should be a flat tappet block with 9.50 deck height.
There ! you got it!
So do you think rings gasket set, guide seals and stuff were the same?
I kinda put the cart before the horse on this one ,trying to save time ( that flat-rater in me) and picked up above parts before 'dead-positive I.D" Thanks alot !, I really appreciate the insight and info...Cheers!
There is no difference in gaskets and seals for any 5.8 motor after 1987, and the longblock seals and gaskets are good for motors back into the '70's.. obviously these earlier motors had mechanical fuel pumps and carb intakes so some of the acessory gaskets are different. You should generally buy rings and pistons, cam and crank bearings together after you find out if the block and rotating assembly needs to be machined.. assuming a complete rebuild.
Whew!! Great news! The 351wfuel inj engine and AOD trans came with the package the PO started..91 351w stock with 600 miles on it ..he said...
I didn't want to take a chance and felt a tear-down would be a prudent thing to do ..just to inspect it...
After removing the heads, I found this gooeyrust looking stuff where the antifreeze used to flow..in all the passages..So I sent it out for a hot tank, new cam bearings ,freeze-plugs and a nice hone..I'm hoping to assemble this weekend..they sure rust fast fresh out of the hot-tank.Thank's a million for the info! I'm just glad I caught the corrosion goo before it settled in the new Radiator/heatercore.Worth every bit of cash NOW vs later with certain cooling problems.
