Pick-up box interchange

Hi,

Can someone please tell me if I could put a 1990 F-150 8ft dual tank box on my 1985 f-250 which has an 8 foot box and dual tanks? And does extended cab play a role in this at all?Need to know a.s.a.p. as the box is being held for me for a few hours. Thanks for any help.
Mike

Yes, it will fit. The lines will not match up, but it will fit. You'll have to make sure you get the tailgate for that bed too, because your 80-86 tailgate will not fit.

Crew Cab, Super Cab and Single cab does not matter. The beds are all the same.

The bed lines fit pretty well. The difference is in the fender well openings. Most people never even notice. The newer bed has a flare out on the wheel well lip where ours have an indention.

If the price is right and the original beds are hard to come by, then go for it. You could always cut out a set of early ones and weld them in to the newer bed.

Exactly. If I needed to, I would go for an 87-96 bed. Cut the wheel openings out, and the only way left to tell what year truck it came off of is the area above the taillights and the top of the bedsides.

The inner bed sides and front bed panel are the same from 1973-1996.

The taillight area is different as well ... the newer box has rounded corners the corners are more square on the older boxes.

All items that only a trained eye will notice.

-Enjoy

Are your outer wheel wells rotted away? Is this going to be a pretty truck or just an old reliable?

There are fragments of outer wheel wells left and severe dents on both lower half sides. I know for sure it will look better than it does.

Put her on there. Most of the older trucks you see actually do have a newer bed if you know what to look for.

I'd definitely grab the newer bed and then cut in a set of 80-86 wheel wells so that they match. the upper and lower body lines match but the wheel wells are different 87-96 (and 97 HD trucks) so you could essentially patch the correct panel in much the way you would replace an original rusted panel

Thanks again for the replies. I think I will have some new 80-86 style fender well patches to make it look more correct. Thanks again,
Mike

Do you really care that much? Thats alot of work to cut those out and replace them. Seems like alot of work to do when only a trained eye will notice the difference and who will really care in the end. Unless your planning on building a show truck...

That's the bed off of my 96 on my big truck...
Only someone who knows the difference will notice, and even less will actually care.
These trucks are far from collectors items.
