Its simply and fairly logical. Next time you are in your car or something else beside your truck that you can put the pump on full blast, do it , and then crouch down and if you catch the light just right or you may not even have to you can see all the splashing the diesel is making as it comes out the nozzle. It usually ends up draining down the side of your paint job. I can walk by almost any truck and see the trails of it down the side of the truck from the pump door down. This is waste that cost us almost four dollars a gallon. Secondly with the diesel coming out that fast it mixes more into the air(more so with gas), and that diesel in the air floats into the atmosphere or right back into the tank at the gas station. Thanks I actually only learned this a few weeks ago, but its good to know that all those extra minutes I spent waiting on the pump wasn't for nothing.
