351M400 demand

LAST EDITED ON 29-Oct-00 AT 10:21 PM (EST)[p]Does anyone else want to see more performance parts for the 351M/400?. If so i emailed holley they said they would send it to the product managers. There's alot of cost for R&D
so alot of demand has to be there to go through the cost of R&D. So if you want to see more performance parts and not go to a 351W or a 460(nothing against the 351W or 460i like them too i just would like to see some performance parts for the M-Block) email them and tell them holley at help@support.holley.com rember they own about 6 differnt comapnys including Weiand and Lunati. The M-block I think has alot of potental it just needs more options like forged cranks like the 351W and 460.

Thanks
Curtis

Curtis,

One of the popular myths about the 351M/400 engines is that there aren't a lot of performance/aftermarket parts for them. The 351M/400 has just enough in common with the 351C that a lot of 351C performance parts can be used with the 351M/400.

What parts are you looking for that you can't find? The forged cranks you mentioned are a waste of money, unless you are serious about running over 6K rpm regularly (and you have the serious wallet to back it up). If that's the case, I'd suggest that using the 351M/400 is barking up the wrong tree anyway. The engines that are better suited to that application have forged cranks available for them. The 351M/400 doesn't need a forged crank.

You want valvetrain mods? Almost all the valvetrain components for the 351C will fit the 351M/400, valves, springs, keepers, valve guides, rocker arms, lifters, camshafts, and timing sets. Every major cam maker (and most smaller ones) has at least a dozen different 351C/351M/400 camshafts to choose from. You can get stainless valves, titanium valves, or even sodium-filled valves for the 351C/351M/400 engines.

You want pistons? There aren't a lot of 351M/400-specific pistons available, though the selection is adequate. If you still want more, you can use 351C pistons, and once again, there are dozens of different 351C pistons available.

About the only (worthwhile) performance parts you really can't get for the 351M/400 are EFI components. The design of the 351M/400's Thermactor AIR plumbing in the intake manifold and cylinder heads is incompatible with a feedback-controlled (O2 sensor) fuel delivery system. OTOH, if you really want feedback fuel injection on a 351M/400, you can adapt a 302 or 351W-type Thermactor setup, with air injected into the exhaust pipes after the manifold/header, and use O2 sensors with something like a Holley ProJection unit to control it.

My suggestion is to do more research on what's really out there, and learn more about the 351M/400 engine so you know what you can adapt and use on the 351M/400 and so you can have realistic performance/application expectations for this engine.

Speaking of Holley, did you know that they recently introduced a Weiand Stealth EGR intake manifold (#8310) for the 351M/400?

Yes i think holley is trying to kill the action plus intake manifold or something because it isnt on holleys site anymore. What i wanted to see for the 351M/400 is stronger rods, my friend just had his 400 professionally rebuilt he put about 5,000 miles on it took it out muddin the reconditoned #5 rod snapped and runined #5 cylnder. I know that probibly wount happen to me but stronger rods just seem like a good idea to me. I would say aluminum heads to but i would have to smack myself the cast iron heads flow good enough for me so thats out the only reason for aluminum heads would be for weight reductons. there was something else but i cant rember right now. You said there isnt any fuel injection for it wouldent the Holley Pro-jection kit work for it?

Thanks

Curtis,

The Action Plus for the 351M/400 has been replaced with the Stealth model, which is now available in both EGR and non-EGR versions. The Stealth is a newer and better design.

As for the 351M/400 rods, I've seen them handle 4-5K rpm continuous running with no problems, if they are properly prepped, including cleaning up the casting flash and shot peening. If you want more than that, there are places that will cryo treat them. Given the effective rpm range of the 351M/400, I think the stock rods are strong enough. If you need more, then you need a different engine.

I can't address your friend's problem without knowing all the details. I suspect he was "overdoing it" ;-) or the machine shop that built his engine may have skimped on the project. :-(

The Holley Pro-Jection will work, but if you want the feedback control part of it (O2 sensor), you'll need to get rid of the Thermactor AIR system, or modify it if you need emissions legality.

351M400 demand

I think it was just a bad rod. The only reason i am worried is i have thrown a rod on my Honda 200X 3 wheeler the thing was idlin too. I know i will be pushing on this motor when its done after its broke in but i doubt i will be pushing more than 5,000 mabey alittle more for playin in the mud. I just dont want to see all my money go straight down the toliet.

Thanks
Curtis
