A friend of mine has a '95 7.3 4x4 truck. while driving down the interstate, it cut out, having no power and only able to drive 25mph wide open. Had a very hard time trying to restart truck the next day. I checked warm up valve, Icp, fuses, fuel pressure, checked fuel bowl and looked full. He can only get rpms up to 2700-3000 and has a big miss in the idle. Can't drive it with the way it runs. it really smoked before it finally started. It also has had the harness replaced by the dealer 2 years ago.
Need help trying to figure out whats wrong with it. Could it be stuck injector, or CPS?
Andy
That's what I would think as well I just changed all mine and had 2 uvc harnesses burnt and the check engine light was not on? took a scan to find out what it was although the signs were there ,try to unplug the harness from the vcg and see if any of them are burnt you will smell it if they are or find someone with a scan tool to check it
actually it was a gallon low, I couldn't believe it was that low, but still wouldn't run after that. It will fire while running with the starter. It finally started with smoke coming out but finally cleared up. Now just running really rough.
No Check engine light. I think it had new harness put on 3 years ago. I checked the cables going to both sides of valve covers. I'll see if i can get a scanner.
Go out and run the truck on the road. Usually they have to be more than a gallon low on oil beofre they run bad but you never know. It takes a while to get the air worked out if that happens.
No luck with driving it. Its all I can do to get it started. Theres plenty of smoke while cranking. I tried checking fuel pressure with a tire guage best I could and showed around 40PSI if I did it right.
I checked the wiring going into valve covers and looks fine. They were replaced 3 yrs ago by the dealer.
Any suggestions?

So did you unplug the wires from the gaskets and see if they had oil in them or were burnt sometimes they will melt inside first usually starts with a faulty glow plug or two that have too much resistance it will melt the harness from the inside out
I checked with an ohms meter both glow plugs and injectors on both sides and the injectors were all consistantly 3.5 ohms. I pulled valve covers off to visually check everything and it seems ok.
I had the truck plugged in all night and can't even get it to start. I've kept the battery charged.
Is it possible the CPS was on the edge of going out?
When it ran it felt like 2 cylinders wern't firing and could only drive 25 MPH.
if you have a stuck injector you will have constant white smoke. The white smoke could be other things well. Stuck injectors isn't much of a problem with these trucks.
ok, there was lots of smoke while trying to start it. but when it ran rough a few days ago there wasn't excessive smoke coming out.
I don't know, Could it be CPS, IDM, or the computer? I'm running out of ideas and I don't have a scanner.
I just had the same problem and it became a nightmare. The new low sulfer bio diesel eats away at the coating in your fuel tank causing it it get collected in the sump screen. You'll need to drop and replace/repair your tank, chasis fuel pump and engine filter. If you rap on the flat spot under your fuel tank and the problem subsides temporarily that is your clue.
