Aod problems

okay i just got my new daily driver home, it is a sweet 92 grand marquis. it has 57k on it runs fabuluos, but reverse is out of it. when a trans loses a gear generally speaking is that some kind of hard part failure? or is it a normal overhaul piece like clutches etc?. I am getting a core from the buddy i bought the car from, just wondering if there are extra parts i will need to buy, or just a complete rebuild kit? also as long as i am asking i got 19.? mpg on the 112 mile highway drive home. I couldnt tell if it was going into overdrive, i dont believe so. they are so quiet and isolated that it really was tough to feel. the only thing that i could use to gauge was squeezing on the throttle, it just lunged forward as if it was in 3rd gear, then when i let off it slowed rapidly. od and reverse go out together? oh well it is a great car and i can do the trans myself. thanks for the help. Dan

i'm not sure of what internal probs are likely, but i do know that the AOD is crap, i am going to be putting the forth one in my 85 F150 this week or next, first bought the truck in 2003. also had a 86 town car that lost OD and shifted really hard. I have a C6 that i want to put in my truck but can't seem to find the correct drive shaft. by your gas milage i would guess that you need a tune up and or you OD is out from my experience. goodluck with it!

PS..i love ford...just not fond of the AOD

well amazing how much more responsive the car is after discovering the tv cable wasnt even hooked up. the bushing like clip that attaches it to the throttle has broken. i have engineered it momentarily until i can get a replacement clip. I am now almost certain od is also out of it. The guy i bought it from junks these cars out all the time to demo them, he is gonna get me another trans that i can rebuild. in the mean time use pull through parking only hahaha!! Dan

Thank you 85e, even though you do not like them, i truly appreciate the links. it seems tci has a pressure control that will help with alot of the problems. sorry you hate yours, but i am pretty excited about mine. I am gonna tear into it just as soon as my buddy drops a core in my lap. amazing all these trans repair men believe this to be voodoo, or some kind a magic shuff. man all ya gotta do is look at the guys building them, they aint rocket scientists moonlighting in a trans shop. not that they arent talented in there own right, its just this job isnt that big of a deal. besides my trans will come with a guarantee.... if it isnt right, i am guaranteed to do it again! hahaha! thanks for the links, reps to ya! 85F150 hates them. I have no feelings for them at all..... Good luck with it. It seems like they are troublesome, but can be fixed. The major beef then becomes the price of fixing when compared to a fresh C6 for example.

Like I said, good luck to you.

Thumbs up

honestly i did not realize that there was so much that you could do to an AOD to imrove it...and really feelkda stupid cuz of all the work i have done on old ford trucks i never knew that the "kick down rod" was not a kick down! i now am trying to decide if i want to put a shift kit and other improvements into my "new" AOD or try to use my other tranny witch i am 75% sure is a C6, i though i would need a new driveshaft for the C6 tho, i dunno???

I think the first question is what year your AOD is. TCI (I think, certainly one of those sites) says they only use '88-'93 cores due to changes made in the AOD as the warranty claims piled up.

Then check the goodies list and see if it makes sense to persue AOD vs. C6, which is a different length and probably requires a different shaft. One of the sites has trans dimensions so you can see AOD vs. others.

Good luck to all.

yea e150, my bad, i missed the difference in your screen names at first. nonetheless thank you for the links. i am gonna tear the behind out of the aod as soon as my extre shows up! then i will build the extra, just in case i have to activate my guarantee. hahaha!! sorry but i really like od, and the basic aod is simple enough to continue that love affair. now an aod/e on the other hand! thanks again. Dan
