Hey all. I got my 400 together awhile ago, but I'm just getting going on it again. I have a question.
I bought an Edelbrock round air cleaner assembly, and what I would like to know is where does the hose go for the back "valve" on the motor. I know where it went on my old oil bath. The new assembly came with a fitting to attatch on the bottom, but is there supposed to be a filter on it?
I'm sorry about the lack of detail, but it's kinda hard to explain..
If memory serves me right, the factory filters have that hose connection before the main filter. Thus it picks up 'dirty' air and needs its own filter.
The Edelbrock filter (just went to the garage and looked at one) is piped inside the main filter, so it picks up 'clean' air. No additional filter needed that way.
Allright, that makes sense... The only other problem is that there seems to be a small amount of oil that comes out of the fitting on the valve cover. should there be a PCV valve on it??
I'm a little fuzzy on that but I don't think it will help - my engine is a worn out 351M that has a good bit of blow-by so I figured that's where the oil comes from on it.
As I understand it, that hose is supposed to be the fresh air intake for the pcv system so it normally shouldn't need a check valve. I suppose it is possible under high revs for some oil to excape that way even on a solid engine.
Your current pcv is supposed to keep oily vapors from flowing that direction. Make sure it is clean and functioning properly.
Oops, helps if I read carefully. Yes - the fitting on the valve cover should have a pcv installed (at least there is on this 77). The rubber bushing gets old and hard, cracks, shrinks, etc. Get a new bushing/grommet and pcv valve on there. It should help solve your problem.
Hmm, mine is a little different I think. The fitting that is on the valve cover (the one on the passenger side at the back)doesn't come out. It is built into the valve cover, and it only spins around. I have a friend that has a 460, and he has aftermarket covers. His is just a hole with a grommet. What he did was just put a small K&N filter on it for that purpose.
The fitting is about 7/16. Sould I just put a hose stright to the bottom of the air cleaner. And if so, should I also install an in line PCV valve??
Sorry 'bout that - wrong end of the system. The hose you're talking about is just like you described. I was thinking about the pcv hose connection at the front driver's side that goes into the oil fill cap. Good luck with it.
Scud, I just did the same change you are doing. I have an open element K&N air filter, with no connections. I have a small K&N breather on the rear of the passenger side valve cover, to filer the PCV intake air. The PCV valve goes on the drivers side front, and connects thru a hose to the rear of the carb, or carb plate. The engine starts, idles, and runs great with this setup, with no blowby.
i get air blowing out of the hose on the passengerside rear , i am assuming it has alot of blow by??? it only smokes a little bit if you really rev on it constantly. no smoke while regular driving.
i have the same air cleaner on my 400 and i ran a hose from the pass pcv to my carb and put a breather cap on the driver side and works fine. never did try to hook it up to my edl air cleaner housing.
Get rid of those round chrome air filters. They are only suitable for a weekender or trailer queen. They do not prevent carb icing which will occur under a surprising range of conditions and is very hard to diagnose.
