couple things I found on E4OD which is earl version of 4R100
If second gear is begining to wear or glaze it could also cause a harsh shift. These conditions will cause slippage at the start of the shift with a hard apply at the end. This type of shift is often reffered to as a slide-bump shift.
Also you could have a problem in your transmission's accumulator body. A problem with the 1-2 accumulator could cause a harsh or delayed 1-2 shiift. A problem with the line modulator valve could also cause this, but it would usually effect more than one gear.
The lag you speak of is present in mine also. Except I have nailed the gas even more and the tranny is firmly still in first gear and will take off as soon as you hit the throttle. The truck feels like you are driving a standard shift and holding it at 2000-3000 rpm's then powershifting it. There is no slippage whatsoever that I can feel. I even tried it on a hill today to see if the truck would loose any speed. It didn't slow down at all. The delay is only about 1-3 seconds but drives me crazy when it bangs.
So here is what happened yesterday and today with the tranny. I stopped at two shops yesterday to have them look at my truck. There are no codes to be had. I have a mechanical issue inside the tranny. First guy says it needs a rebuild. Second guy says that I have a spring broken in my valve body on the 1-2 shift valve or a seal gone on the clutch piston. He also stated that I should have it rebuilt. So I found a used tranny yesterday with 39K on it for $615.00. I go to pick it up and the converter has rust on the seal area from being stored off the tranny. No way am I taking that one. The owner offers me a brand new rebuilt HD converter from a local tranny shop. Ok, I can go for that since they cost over $300. This tranny guy and I get to talking about my truck and tranny woes. He told me I have a broken 1-2 shift valve spring in the valve body. He says Ford's are known to have these problems. I told him I was going to tear the tranny down to rebuild it for a spare. He said that while I'm at it to replace all the springs and check ***** as the ***** are rubber. With two out of three experts diagnosing my problem as being a simple return spring on the number 1-2 shift valve makes me almost want to just change the spring. But with 125K on the truck and boating season coming up I swapped it out today. I will rebuild the old one for future use when I can find the time. The transplant was a huge success. The truck is back to normal. It is also one heck of a job and you do need another helper to muscle that moster into place.
