I just recently bought a 2003 F250 SD 4x4 with 125K on it for cheap money. I drove it for a few days and the tranny started shifting late from first to second gear with a very loud bang. Is this the solenoid pack that is causing this to happen? It does it only from 1st to 2nd gear. The rest of the gears shift fine.
Has it thrown a code? You will know if the Over-drive button blinks...

My OD light has not blinked and there are no codes present if I use an engine scanner to read the codes. Yesterday I took down the tranny pan to take a peak inside and see if there was any sign of abusive wear done to the tranny. The pan was spotless. The fluid I took out looked fairly new. It does not smell at all like it has ever been burnt. I did change the filter while I was in there and replaced the 7+ quarts of fluid while I was at it. Can you read the tranny codes with an Actron engine scanner or do you need a special code reader to do that?
One other thing that I want to mention is that this shifting problem from 1st to 2nd gear happen once before. I did notcie one or two semi hard shifts with it at about 2000 to 2200 rpm's. Then it went away and the tranny was shifting fine. Then all of a sudden it started happening again and now does it all the time. Now I just wind it out a bit and let off the gas until it shifts then step back on the gas again. This aleviates the heavy bang between 1st and 2nd gear. I was thinking that something is definitely sticking. Which leads me to the electric solenoids from what I have read here and on other truck websites.
You dont say what engine you have.If you have the diesel. The actron scanner will not retrieve thre codes.I dont know if that is true with the gassers.
I guess I goofed on leaving out the motor info. My truck has the 5.4 Triton in it. I will say the motor has a lot of power compared to my old 1994 351W. My old truck only had 103K on it with 4:10 gearing. This SD has 3:73's in it. I'll know for sure about the power difference once I hook up my 4500 pound boat behind it.
My truck was doing the exact same thing, it wouldnt shift right until I let off the gas. The bad news was it needed a rebuild. The one way clutches went and 1-2 solenoid, and it would skip 2nd gear and shift into 3rd. I only has 50k on my truck when this happened, was a 2500.00 repair, sold the truck after it was fixed.

Yours isn't doing the same thing that mine is. My transmission does not skip 2nd gear. It always shifts into second gear no matter how hard I push it. I can run it up to 4000 rpm's and it will ship into 2nd gear. I can drive it like an old lady and it will shift into second gear without a bang at a much lower RPM. It will shift without a bang if I run it up to 2500-3000 rpm's, let off the gas, count out 2 seconds and step back on the gas. It also does not bang on the way down when slowing for a red light.
That is the problem I had, I didnt realize that it was skipping 2nd gear because it was shifting but just not like it should. The trans shop told me what it was doing and the reason why. I had no bang just the belt would squeek when it shifted. Mine did the exact same when I let off the gas as you describe.

What belt squeak do you speak of? There are no belts in the tranny. Your tranny didn't bang like mine is doing. Mine does go into 2nd gear, then 3rd and 4th and then the torque convertor locks up. I've gone throught his cycle many time yesterday and today to make sure what it was doing before I posted the question. I'm hoping it is only the solenoid. If a clutch pack was gone my pan should be full of particles or black grit. I've rebuilt a few C6's over the years with blown reverse and first gear clutch packs. I'm just not up on these new fangled electonic trannies with lock up convertors. My old 1994 Ford F250 I just sold had a bad convertor in it. The OD light was flashing and the tranny felt like it was slipping when under a load. That tranny also banged but into all gears.
The serp. belt on the motor was squeeking when the trans shifted. Search here for the word 'diode'.....see if any of those posts are like what you are having for a problem. I hope you make you better then I did.

gas engines don't have the mechanical diode, only '01 diesel
couple things I found on E4OD which is earl version of 4R100
If second gear is begining to wear or glaze it could also cause a harsh shift. These conditions will cause slippage at the start of the shift with a hard apply at the end. This type of shift is often reffered to as a slide-bump shift.
Also you could have a problem in your transmission's accumulator body. A problem with the 1-2 accumulator could cause a harsh or delayed 1-2 shiift. A problem with the line modulator valve could also cause this, but it would usually effect more than one gear.
