I will know for sure when I talk to mech tomorrow. Guy up front said they did a dead-head test (sp?)...paperwork says replaced sleeve on #2, "ran kill box", knocking #4, declined further repairs. Guy said they basically kill each cylinder until the knocking disappears to narrow it down to #4. They were going to do a compression check on #2 for sure to see if the fuel cup was the cause of the knocking (I had told them the knocking was from #2 when I took it in).....so I assume they did compression check on #4 after they narrowed down to that cylinder. I will know for sure tomorrow.
Make sure the dealership guys actually "inspect" the problem area- I was told they wanted to replace all 8 injectors (6&8 were "bad") replace the glow plugs (not necessary) valve cover gasket and wiring harness. All for the tune of $4500!!! I'm sure if they could have, they would have replaced all the valves too.....
Turns out I only have bad o-rings or something that would build up junk on #6 and #8. IF the dummy would have actually taken out the injector, instead of just telling me to throw money at it, I might have actually had him do the work.
Trying to kinda screw me caused him about thousand dollars. I instead bought new sticks from Swamps (cause I do have 200k on the clock) for a lot less than the Ford good guy price...
Well it sounds like they hooked up the break out box for that so they did well there. If they indeed did a proper blowby test, then you may have trouble. What was the reading? Did you ever notice a huge choo choo smoking out of the oil fill cap or ccv mod if you've done it? All it should have is a steady stream of vapor. One hole blowing by will make it puff puff in a pronounced manner. Did they back it up with a contribution test? Matter of fact, has #4 ever failed? Lotsa questions bro.
EDIT: What I am getting at is it looks like they are going down the standard protocol list which is good. Without #s though we cannot be sure. If #4 is sub par for compression, it may be blowby or even something else. There is more than one reason for low compression and an injector problem will hammer. Not trying to give false hope here, but they need to back that up with a CCT and maybe a leakdown, IDK. That blowby is bad news and the #s would be good to know.
If it is blow-by, and assuming the only thing that would cause it is worn out rings- what would he be looking at to get it rebuilt? I know a new 7.3 will go for about $10,000! Hell, if it needs a rebuild, and if you have the time Allen, I'd just do that. You can get .020 over pistons and rebuild kits on ePay for a heck of a lot cheaper than a new rebuilt engine.
