hey guys, i just got a new 2006 f250 with tow mirrors. only thing is the mirrors have the chrome covers on them. Id love to switch them out and put on red covers to match the truck. can i do this or are they a part of the mirror? if i can does anyone know where i can get them? ive looked all over the internet with no luck.
thanks
The covers can come off. However, I've never had any luck releasing the tabs that hold them on. Supposedly, you can tilt the mirror part and reveal the tabs and release them that way.
Yes, tilt the mirror all the way towards the truck and you'll see the tabs. Be careful, they will break.
Yes, you can get the paintable covers...I've had to replace one already. Make sure you specify you want the paintable cover. Otherwise you get the pebbled black cover that will have to be worked over before painting it.
I removed my covers to replace my signal/clearance light with the Recon smoked ones and you have to put a fair bit of pressure on the tabs to get them to release, but I didn't break any.
There are 3 tabs you need to release and you can do two from the outside by tilting the mirror in towards the truck and the third by tilting the mirror out and up away from the truck. The best tool was an 8" or 10" flat head screwdriver. The tabs feel like they will break by the time you get them released, but they all stood up to the pressure on mine.
Good time to upgrade to recon smoked lenses if you like the look. I have the chrome covers and the recon smoked lenses look great with them as well. You might want to search for someone with painted ones and try to do a trade.
